Histori

Chung Ju-Yung founded Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company in 1947. The company's first model, Cortina, was released in collaboration with Ford Motor Company in 1968. When Hyundai wanted to develop their own car. , they hired George Turnbull in February 1974, former Executive Director of Austin Morris in British Leyland. He in turn hired five other British car engineers. They are the design of Kenneth Barnett's body, engineer John Simpson and Edward Chapman, former John Crosthwaite BRM as chassis engineer and Peter Slater as chief development engineer. In 1975, Pony, the first South Korean car, was released, with styling by Giorgio Giugiaro of ItalDesign and powertrain technology provided by Mitsubishi Motors Japan. Exports began the following year to Ecuador and soon thereafter to the Benelux countries.

In 1984, Hyundai exported Pony to Canada, but not to the United States, because Pony did not pass emissions standards there. Canadian sales are exceeding expectations, and that is at one point the best-selling car in the Canadian market. In 1985, a one million Hyundai car was built.

In 1986, Hyundai began selling cars in the United States, and Excel was nominated as "Best # 10" by Fortune magazine, largely because of its affordable price. The company began producing models with its own technology in 1988, starting with the middle Sonata. In the spring of 1990, Hyundai's automobile aggregate production reached four million. In 1991, the company successfully developed its first gasoline engine, four Alpha cylinders, as well as its own transmission, thus paving the way for technological independence.

In 1996, Hyundai Motor India Limited was established with a production plant in Irungattukottai near Chennai, India.

In 1998, Hyundai began improving its image in an effort to establish itself as a world-class brand. Chung Ju Yung transferred Hyundai Motor's leadership to his son, Chung Mong Koo, in 1999. Hyundai's parent company, Hyundai Motor Group, invests heavily in the quality, design, manufacture and research of its long-term vehicles. He added a 10-year or 100,000-mile (160,000 km) warranty for cars sold in the United States and launched an aggressive marketing campaign.

In 2004, Hyundai was ranked second in "initial quality" in a survey/study by J.D. Power and Associates. Hyundai is now one of the 100 most valuable brands in the world. Since 2002, Hyundai has also become one of the world's official sponsors for the FIFA World Cup.

In 2006, the South Korean government initiated an investigation into Chung Mong Koo's practices as head of Hyundai, suspecting him of corruption. On April 28, 2006, Chung was arrested, and charged with embezzlement of South Korea's 100 billion won (US $ 106 million). As a result, Hyundai Vice Chairman and CEO, Kim Dong-jin, succeeded him as head of the company. On September 30, 2011, Yang Seung Suk announced his resignation as CEO of Hyundai Motor Co. In the interim replacement period, Chung Mong-koo and Kim Eok-jo will divide the job of the CEO position.

Research and development

Hyundai has six research and development centers, located in South Korea (three offices), Germany, Japan and India. In addition, the center in California developed the design for the United States.

Hyundai has created applications with augmented reality, showing users how to operate and maintain vehicles.

Business

In 1998, following the shocks in the South Korean auto industry caused by excessive expansion and the Asian financial crisis, Hyundai acquired the majority of rivals Kia Motors. Hyundai has 33.88% of Kia.

In 2000, the company formed a strategic alliance with DaimlerChrysler and broke its partnership with the Hyundai Group. In 2001, Daimler-Hyundai Truck Company was formed. In 2004, however, DaimlerChrysler renounced interest in the company by selling its 10.5% stake for $ 900 million.

Hyundai has invested in manufacturing plants in North America, India, Czech Republic, Russia, China and Turkey as well as research and development centers in Europe, Asia, North America and the Pacific. United States

Hyundai Motor America began selling cars in the United States on February 20, 1986, with a single model, Hyundai Excel, offered in a variety of trim and body styles. That year, Hyundai recorded the most car sales in its first year of business in the United States compared to other car brands; total sales in 1986 was 168,882.

Initially well received, Excel errors soon became apparent; cost-cutting measures cause reliability to suffer. With an increasingly poor reputation for quality, Hyundai's sales plummeted, and many dealers benefited from improvements or leaving the product. At one point, Hyundai became the butt of many jokes (ie Hyundai stands for "Hope you understand nothing is easy to drive and cheap") and even makes David Letterman Top Ten Hilarious Mischief Night Pranks To Play In Space: No.8 - Stick " Hyundai "logo on the main control panel.

In response, Hyundai began investing heavily in long-term quality, design, manufacture and research of vehicles. He added free maintenace for the first 2 years or 24,000 miles for all new cars sold, starting with the 1992 model year. He also added a 10-year powertrain warranty or 100,000 miles (known as Hyundai Advantage) for his vehicles sold in United States of America. In 2004, sales have increased dramatically, and Hyundai's car reputation has increased. In 2004, Hyundai tied up with Honda for an initial brand quality in a survey/study from J.D. Power and Associates, as it has 102 problems per 1000 vehicles. This makes Hyundai second in the industry, just behind Toyota, for the initial quality of the vehicle. The Company continues this tradition by placing the third overall in the Initial Quality Survey J.D. Power 2006, behind only Porsche and Lexus. Hyundai is ranked 4th in the World's Most Admired Companies under the CNN motor vehicle, after BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke), Volkswagen and Daimler in 2011.

Hyundai continues to invest heavily in its operations in America as its car gets more and more popular. In 1990, Hyundai established the Hyundai Design Center in Fountain Valley, California. The center moved to a $ 30 million facility in Irvine, California in 2003, and was renamed Hyundai Kia Motors Design and Technical Center. In addition to the design studio, the facility is also housed at Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI, founded in 1986), the subsidiary responsible for all engineering activities in the US for Hyundai. The Hyundai America Engineering Center moved to a new 200,000 square foot (19,000 m 2 ) office, $ 117 million headquarters in Superior City, Michigan (near Ann Arbor) in 2005. Later that same year, HATCI announced that it will expand its technical operations in Michigan and employ 600 additional engineers and other technical employees for five years. The center also has employees in California and Alabama.

Hyundai incorporated a new manufacturing facility, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, in April 2002. The new plant in Montgomery, Alabama was completed in 2004, at a cost of $ 1.7 billion. Production began in May 2005. It employs over 3,000 workers in 2012. Currently, the factory assembles Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, and Hyundai Theta engines. This is Hyundai's second attempt at producing cars in North America since the Hyundai Auto Canada Inc. plant. in Quebec was closed in 1993.

Hyundai America Technical Center completed the construction of Hyundai/Kia proof ground in California City, California in 2004. The 4,300 acre (17 km 2 ) facility is located in the Mojave Desert and has 6.4 miles (10.3Ã, km) oval track, Vehicle Dynamics Area, vehicle handling course in oval track, paved hill road, and some special surface paths. The 30,000 square foot complex (2,800m 2 ) featuring office and indoor testing areas is also located on site. The facility was built at a cost of $ 50 million. Air sights can be found here.

In 2003, Consumer Reports, based on complaints about the 2002 new car model that is generally less than a year of use, Hyundai's reliability rating is tied to Honda; however, J.D. Power and Associates ranked Hyundai vehicles in 2002 below the industry average according to its annual Preliminary Quality Survey, which saw problems in the first 90 days of ownership.

In 2006, JD quality rating. Power and Associates, overall the Hyundai brand is ranked 3rd, right behind Porsche and Lexus, and beating old rivals Toyota. Asia

China

Hyundai models sell well in China. Hyundai is currently working with Chinese partners, Beijing Automobile Industry Holding Co. to develop electric cars for sale only in China. In September 2011, it was announced that Korean celebrity Lee Min Ho, popular in China, will promote Hyundai's new 'Veloster' in China.

Hyundai and its twin company, Kia, lost market share for relying on sedans, bad brand image and local Chinese cars competing with competing SUVs.

Motorsport

Hyundai entered motorsport by competing in the F2 World Rally Championship class in 1998 and 1999. In September 1999, Hyundai launched the Accent WRC, World Rally Car based on Accent Hyundai. Hyundai's World Rally Team debuted in cars on the 2000 Swedish Rally and achieved their first top ten results at the Argentine Rally that year, when Alister McRae and Kenneth Eriksson finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Eriksson then drove to fifth place in New Zealand and fourth in Australia. In 2001, Hyundai debuted a new evolution of Accent WRC, which is intended to improve reliability, but the car's performance is still not good enough to challenge the four big teams (Ford, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, and Subaru). However, in the final GB Rally of the season, the team achieved their best results by finishing McRae's fourth and Eriksson's sixth.

For the 2002 season, Hyundai recruited four-time world champion Juha Kankkunen with Freddy Loix and Armin Schwarz. Kankkunen's fifth place in New Zealand was the team's best result, but they managed to beat Koda and Mitsubishi by one point in battle for fourth place in the manufacturer's world championship. In September 2003, after a season hampered by budgetary constraints, Hyundai announced a withdrawal from the WRC and planned to return in 2006, which did not happen.

In 2006, after the announcement that Korea is scheduled to get the Formula One Grand Prix, Hyundai plans to enter the sport. The Korean Grand Prix was first held in 2010, but Hyundai has yet to enter the championship. Hyundai announced they will reveal their future rally plans at the Chicago Auto Show 2011, on February 9th. The current plan for the rally is focused around the latest Hyundai release, Veloster. In September 2012 Hyundai announces that they will start the WRC with i20 rally models to rival the likes of Ford Fiesta, Citroen DS3 and Mini Countryman.

The car is scheduled to make its first competitive appearance in the 2014 Rallye Monte Carlo, but can compete during the 2013 season to aid development.

The car will be operated by Hyundai's performance division, Hyundai Motorsport from the base in Frankfurt, Germany.

Pemasaran

Live Brilliant

The Brilliant Live global brand campaign begins in 2012. The campaign will be an extension of Hyundai's "Modern Premium" way of thinking as part of their brand new direction. The goal is to strive to realize the company's aspirations to make every moment customers spend with Hyundai as a moment of happiness, filled with brilliant memories.

Corporate social responsibility

In 2008, Hyundai Motors established a committee to oversee the Corporate Social Responsibility program. Among the program's initiatives is the "Global Joy Volunteer Program".

The Hyundai Motors India Foundation (HMIF) has invested more than 20 million rupees in various corporate social responsibility programs in India. In 2011, they started the village adoption project "Go Green" in Tamil Nadu. The goal is to promote environmentally friendly products, increase forest cover in Tamil Nadu, and improve living and hygiene conditions in the villages of the region. A number of schools have been adopted for improvement with HMIF donating approximately 450 benches to public schools and drilling 10 drilling wells.

Controversy

The amount of fuel economy increases

After an investigation in 2012, the EPA found that 35% of all Hyundai and Kia vehicles in 2011-2013 have increased fuel economy figures; up to six miles per gallon. Currently, Hyundai and Kia have embarked on a replacement program for affected vehicle owners 2011-2013. In 2014 the company issued a $ 350 million fine by the US government, agreed to pay $ 395 million in 2013 to settle claims from vehicle owners, and agreed to pay $ 41.2 million to cover "investigative fees" from 33 state attorneys parts of the US.

Incorrectly engine and horsepower advertised

Some consumers complain that the engines shipped with Hyundai Veloster in Brazil are lower than advertised. The independent test confirms that it is not the same machine, and only sends 121 CV (119 HP) instead of 140 CVs advertised (138 HP), with cars getting a derogatory nickname like Slowster in the Brazilian market.

Marketing controversy

In April 2013, Hyundai Motors UK released an ad depicting a man who attempted suicide through carbon monoxide poisoning at ix35, but failed to do so because of non-toxic vehicle emissions. The ad, produced by Hyundai Innocean Worldwide internal agency, received widespread criticism for promoting suicide. Blogger Holly Brockwell posted an open letter to Innocean and Hyundai, reminding them that his father committed suicide in the same way. Hyundai has since removed the video and issued an official apology.
