Plot

During the worst rain storm recorded in the history of the Midwestern United States, truck driver Tom (Christian Slater) and his uncle Charlie (Edward Asner) were collecting money from local flood-affected banks. In the small town of Huntingburg, Indiana, who had been evacuated, Tom and Charlie got into the sewer and got stuck, and Charlie called for delivery to remind the National Guard. They were then ambushed by Jim (Morgan Freeman) and his gang of armed robbers, Kenny (Michael Goorjian), Mr. Mehlor (Dann Florek) and Ray (Ricky Harris). Kenny accidentally shot dead Charlie, when Tom escaped with $ 3 million cash and hid it in a grave.

After being chased through local High School by gangs now traveling by boat and jet ski, Tom takes refuge in a nearby church. She was knocked out and awakened in a cell in the local Sheriff's office. Tom tells Sheriff Mike Collins (Randy Quaid) about the gang and the area he hid his money, even though he locked him up. He and Deputy Head Wayne (Mark Rolston) then went to investigate, while another officer Phil (Peter Murnik) was ordered to take Karen (Minnie Driver), the woman who dropped Tom and is currently restoring the church, out of town. In protest, he pushes Phil out of the boat so he will be able to fill the water pump in his church.

The city's dam continued to experience great pressure from the rain and Hank's operator (Wayne Duvall) was forced to open another spillway flood channel. This causes other large springs to flow through the city, resulting in even worse floods, especially in churches. Tom woke up in his cell, trapped when Mike's building was slowly filled with water. After filling the pump in the church, Karen returns and rescues her by opening a lamp mounted on the roof so she can run away. They are later discovered by the gang, and hide before having to get out of the water because the nearby transformer will explode.

Kenny grabs Tom and they both fall into the water, but Tom fights him before Kenny gets electrocuted and then dies. Tom and Karen enter a nearby house, only to find the locals Doreen (Betty White) and Henry Sears (Richard Dysart) who believe they are looters. After explaining their story, Henry decides to give Tom their boat so he can return to his armored truck. When he reappears from the now submerged truck, he finds Jim and the gang holding the hostage of the elderly couple. Tom gets Jim to let them go by promising that he'll show them where the money is.

On the way to the grave, Jim reveals to Tom that the National Guard never came because Charlie actually called the gang, and fellowship with them. He was just killed because Kenny was never told that Charlie was on their side. Jim then sends Tom to take the money but finds the money disappear. When the gang will shoot him in anger, they are all ambushed by Mike and his deputies, who have found Karen. Mike, having lost the re-election, now no longer cares about justice and intends to save money for himself, Wayne, Phil, and Hank, who have now joined them from the reservoir.

Mr. Mehlor and Ray were killed in a shootout, and Jim and Tom escaped by boat, finding refuge in the church. Wayne takes Karen back to her home, with the intention of raping her. Others tried to force Tom and Jim out by throwing petrol bombs on the roof, but instead were forced to pass through stained glass windows. At Karen's house, Karen managed to stab Wayne with her folding knife, killing her. In the church, there was a shootout, and at one point Tom and Phil faced each other, but Phil could not force himself to shoot him. Hank then shoots Phil, thinking he's a coward.

The dam smothered the alarm, reminding the town that the dam would fail. Offering a deal, Mike says Tom and Jim should let Hank and him go with some money bags. Tom agrees, but Jim does not. Instead, Tom then goes to try to save Karen, before Mike shoots Jim with the gun he's hiding, even though he's not badly hurt. Mike and Hank escape by boat and, when they are forced to go faster to avoid the waves that hit the city, the sheriff pushes Hank out of the boat. He later died after being caught in a gas explosion.

Tom arrives at Karen's house, to find him handcuffed to the banister. He first tried to free him with a saw, then used a Wayne pistol. The water is so high they now have to go up to the roof and then be caught by Mike. Jim, who managed to escape from the church, came from behind them by boat. Mike shoots him, paralyzes the wheel, forces him to go to the roof. As he did so, the engine broke and collided with Mike, dropping him into the water. However, he did not die and tried to shoot Karen when he took the money bag, but Tom and Jim managed to shoot him dead. Tom tells Jim he must leave, just when the State Police arrived. Jim took Mike's pocket and lined it away, as Tom told Karen that the fire damage to his church was not so bad, and that it could be fixed.

Production

Production of this film is a collaborative effort between a number of movie studios, one of which is the British Broadcasting Corporation. Christian Slater himself serves as a co-producer. At one point, John Woo was bound to direct the movie, but he left the project to direct Face/Off instead and the project was taken over by Mikael Salomon.

The film was originally titled The Flood , but that changed because the filmmakers did not want the audience to think it was primarily a disaster movie and not a thriller. However, the film still retains that title in many other countries.

The film was taken in Huntingburg, Indiana, where the film was made (in fact no big river or dam nearby, though there are two dams near the city), as well as a set of $ 6 million in aircraft hangars in Palmdale, California where bomber B -1 Lancer produced, and some exterior in Etobicoke, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

In April 2016, after speaking with the Huntingburg City Office, film historian Adam Nichols was notified and showed a museum located upstairs in the city office where some props, costumes, media, and production stills were featured that featured the film and the 1992 film. Their Own League which was also partly filmed in Huntingburg.

About the ending, Morgan Freeman says: "I play as a bad person in a movie and they show it to an audience - and we let the audience tell us what to do now - you know, and the audience says, 'Well, I do not want him - Morgan can not die! 'And I'm a thief.'He got the money' We went back to the studio and fired back so I did not die and I got the money. '
