The Ford PowerShift is a four-speed dual clutch semi-automatic shiftybox manufactured by Ford Motor Company. The Ford PowerShift gearbox was built by Getrag Ford Transmissions, a joint-venture with Nasa. PowerShift improves fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent when compared to conventional manual transmissions.
The operation of an analog quad clutch transmission with two traditional automatic transmissions, each with its own clutch, operates in parallel and shifts alternately. The Ford unit is six speed with one clutch that works on the second, fifth and sixth gears, and the other is used for first, fourth and seventh teeth. When the first gear is activated, coupling 2-4-6 is released and the second gear uses the drive shaft gear at the end of the drive of the reciprocal torque converter torque. At just the right time, clutch 1-3-5 is released and the 2-4-6 clutch is released. While in second gear, the counter side shifts from first to sixth. This process is repeated with no efficiency loss that is typically associated with a torque converter and, in theory, a smooth smooth shift.
The PowerShift gearbox is a joint development between Ford, Getrag and Luk and was first introduced in Europe. Both Volvo and Ford use wet clutch and hydraulic actuation. However, the new PowerShift gearbox used in Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus uses dry grip and actuation of electric motors/solenoid. Some people have criticized the early pace of PowerShift and the absence of a smooth shift, but Ford continues to release (but not publish) improvements, also known as under table fixes, to software transmissions and firmware designed to address these failures. These improvements do not result in a permanent or permanent cure for the ongoing and widespread problem associated with transmission.

Ford has faced a class action lawsuit in the United States, Australia, and Canada of the PowerShift gearbox as flawed and potentially dangerous in Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta, and Ford EcoSport. The lawsuit alleges that the PowerShift gearbox "continues to experience transmission flaws, including, but not limited to, bucking, kicking, jerking, loud engagement, and delayed acceleration and glide." The US Court tentatively approved the settlement of a US lawsuit on April 25, 2017.
This defect is caused by an incorrect throw pad, transmission control module, or leak from the rear seal of the engine or transmission input shaft. Ford has released US band fixes made in the US and an updated coupling kit but the transmission will eventually have the same problem. This transmission is still equipped with newer Focus and Fiesta models.
Ford Thailand agreed to buy back about 2,000 Ford Fiesta and Focus models with the wrong PowerShift transmission.
Ford Brazil extends guarantee of transmission for up to 10 years or 240,000 km.
Ford USA extends transmission guarantees up to 1 year or 100,000 miles depending on the vehicle year model.
Ford Australia has had a $ 10,000,000 fine imposed on it by the Federal Court of Australia for inappropriate behavior relating to poor customer transmission and handling issues
