The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van developed by Ford Europe and derived from Ford Focus. The first generation was designed by Peter Horbury and introduced in 2002 to replace the older Ford Escort and Fiesta-based Courier vans, which had ceased production in the same year. It has been imported into the North American market since 2010 model. In North America, Transit Connect has no immediate predecessor; the vehicle closest to its size is the standard Aerostar Ford cargo van, which ceased production in 1997.
Ford Tourneo Connect , a leisure activity vehicle, is a Transit Connect with side windows and rear seats. All Transit Connect linked to USA imported in this configuration to avoid 25% "chicken tax" on imported light trucks. In 2013, US Customs told Ford they should stop the practice of importing vans disguised as passenger cars.

Transit Connect was introduced in Europe in October 2002 as a substitute for van-derived vans based on Escort and Fiesta. Escort production in Europe ceased in 2000 (though the van continued for two years), while the Fiesta Courier was also planned to be halted when the fifth-generation Fiesta entered production in 2002. Sharing some components with a much larger Transit, Transit Connect is based on the front-wheel drive C170 platform that is shared with the international Ford Focus, which is common with the first generation North American Ford Focus. Rather than adapting existing bodystyle to van, Transit Connect is designed with sliding side doors.
Van Escort and Fiesta Courier had gathered at the Halewood and Dagenham factories in England, respectively, but the two factories stopped the production of Ford cars (Halewood was handed over to Jaguar, while Dagenham only became the engine factory), so a new production facility was needed.
Transit Connect is assembled by Otosan at the all-new production facility in GÃÆ'¶lcÃÆ'¼k, near Kocaeli, Turkey.
Ford Transit Connect was awarded "Van of the Year 2004" by Professional and Light Truck Van . In its first year in the North American market, Transit Connect was awarded the "North American Truck of 2010" at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).
Update 2009
Since mid-2009, Transit Connect has been imported into the United States and Canada. First shown in the United States at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show, the 2010 production model was introduced at the show the following year on February 11, 2009.
The introduction of North American variants coincides with a mid-cycle facelift that includes a refurbished front grille, deeper front bumper and a new dashboard featuring switchgear and instrument pods from the C307 Focus.
Initially, only the long wheelbase version of the van, equipped with 4L cylinder engine 2.0L and 4 speed 4F27E, offered in North America; elsewhere, 1.8L diesel engine and 5 speed manual transmission is the only powertrain available. Duratec DOHC I-4 2.0L petrol engine has 136hp @ 6300rpm, and 128 lb.-ft. torque @ 4750 rpm. It determines a minimum of 87 octane gasoline and fuel economy is 21 mpg city/27 mpg hwy and 23 mpg combined.
The electric version was followed in 2011, modified by Azure Dynamics Corporation at US facilities.
To build interest and awareness in North America, the Transit Connects, specifically equipped as "mobile showrooms" were featured in industrial parks and elsewhere in 13 US urban areas in May 2009, with the goal of offering 3,000 test drives to small business owners.
With the 2011 model year, Ford offers Transit Connect XLT Premium Wagon in the United States and Canada, a passenger version of the van - with seating for five, a rear window opened for ventilation, blind spot awareness, rear-view cameras, larger wheels, grille body color, and front fog lights.
The Transit Connect Wagon was the first Ford minivan since the resignation of Freestar 2007, although its size was closer to the standard length of the Ford Aerostar sold from 1986 to 1997.
Crop level
In the US, Transit Connect is available in two different trim levels:
XL : Manual window, manual door lock, cloth seat surface, A/MF/M stereo, two speakers, black painted steel wheel with plastic wheel cover, I4 2.0L engine, automatic transmission, wheel-drive, and air conditioning.
XLT : Power window, power door lock, four speakers, and exterior colored accents and bumper.
For the Passenger model, the XLT Premium model is offered, adding this feature to XLT : A/MF/M stereo with single/disc CD/MP3 player and USB and jack input enhancement audio, leather seating surfaces, rear cargo door trims, and enhanced interior soundproofing material. Second generation Transit Connect was introduced on September 6, 2012 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In its first redesign since its introduction in 2002, Transit Connect 2014 adopted many features of the Kinetic Design language. The main design changes are the optional rear lift doors beside the double rear doors favored by people in wheelchairs and shipping companies. Transit Connect will include an optional new feature called MyKey, the key system that is personalized. Owner control MyKey allows vehicle owners to program different keys to limit different vehicle features, such as top speed and maximum radio volume.
In addition to the Otosan plant in Turkey, production now also takes place in Valencia, Spain. As before, to avoid the 25% tariff on imported trucks, all cargo vans sold in the United States will be convertible passenger cars which will then be converted back into cargo configurations at customer's request. Reports have been published that US Customs told Ford they should stop this practice.
North America
The 2014 Transit Connect is powered by 2.5 L L inline-4, or 1.6 L L EcoBoost turbocharged inline-4. The only type of transmission available is the 6-speed 6F-35 automatic. For buyers interested in alternative fuel vehicles, Ford offers optional hardware that allows 2.5L engines to be converted to use CNG or LPG/propane instead of gasoline.
Although it will be sold in the United States, Tourneo Connect will bear the moniker "Transit Connect Wagon". Available in two wheelbase and two roof height, and with a choice of 5 or 7 passenger seats. The latter configuration is the first 7-passenger minivan Ford has sold since the discontinuation of Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey in 2007.
It is available in three models:
XL : I4 2.5L engine, 6-speed 6F-35 automatic transmission, front wheel drive, A/MF/M stereo with additional audio input plugs, two speakers (four speakers for Passenger models) vinyl seating surfaces, manual windows, manual door locks, and painted sixteen-inch black steel wheels with plastic wheel covers. XL is actually placed on top of XLT with a price on the Passenger model.
XLT adds: A/MF/M stereo with HD Radio, USB and an additional audio input jack and four speakers (Cargo model) or six speakers (Passenger model), Ford SYNC, power windows and electric doors key. XLT is actually placed below the XL price on the Passenger model.
Titanium , for the passenger model only added: A/MF/M stereo with HD Radio, single/disc MP3/CD player, rear backup camera, USB audio and auxiliary audio input jack, - seat seats, keyless entry and security system, improved interior noise and interior panel, and sixteen inch alloy wheels (up to seventeen inches), as well as exterior exterior bumpers and accents. This is the top-of-the-line Transit Connect model for Passenger models, and is only available for Passenger models.
Safety and retraction
In 2017, Ford remembers 2013-2015 Ford Transit Connect with 1.6 ecoboost engines due to engine fire risk caused by "lack of cooling circulation". The partial recall contributed to Ford's $ 300 million cost.

Tariff cut
Ford imports all Transit Connects as a passenger vehicle with rear windows, rear seats and rear seat belts to avoid a 25% tariff on imported light trucks. The vehicle was exported from Turkey to the cargo ship owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, arriving in Baltimore, and converted into commercial vehicles at the WWL Vehicle Services Americas Inc facility: the rear window was replaced with metal panels and the rear. seats removed (except in carts). The process takes advantage of the perceived gap in commercial vehicle customs definitions. Because cargo does not require seats with seat belts or rear windows, the presence of these items frees vehicles from commercial vehicle status. Ford's conversion costs hundreds of dollars per van but saved thousands of people for having to pay taxes.
Partly because of this, only the long wheelbase, high roof configuration are exported to North America. In most places, High-roof Transit Connect, like most Ford Econoline vans, can not access multi-storey parking because of the height of 1.98 m (6? 6?).
By January 2013, the gap no longer works and Ford has to pay 25% tax. They are, however, still imported as passenger vans and converted after imports.
Fleet usage
Grumman LLV Replacement
On March 18, 2010, the Canada Post and Ford Motor Company announced that Canada Post would purchase a Ford Transit Connect van fleet to replace the aging Grumman LLV fleet. The right hand tool exists for the version sold in the RHD market, possibly contributing to model selection.
Taxicab
In fleet applications, Ford markets the Ford Transit Connect Wagon as a replacement for the Ford Crown Victoria LWB (discontinued in 2011). For taxi use, modifications include shifting the rear seats a few inches back (to increase leg room and to allow for mounting partitions), rear seat climate control, and yellow school bus paint.
In 2011, Transit Connect is one of three finalists (alongside Karsan V-1 and Nissan NV200) in Tomorrow's bid from New York City tomorrow, in a potential 10-year deal to supply the city by taxi exclusively. Despite losing Taxi from Tommorow to Nissan NV200, the Transit Connect Wagon is still used as a substitute for taxis to Crown Victoria in New York City (as accessible taxis) and other American cities.

Transit Connect has become a popular replacement service vehicle for Canada Post, Bell Canada and Rogers Cable in Canada, which has used a mixture of Chrysler vans, Ford and GM.
Variant
Transit Connect Electric
At Chicago Auto Show 2009, Ford confirmed the development of a battery version of Transit Connect. Later at the Geneva Auto Show that same year, Ford demonstrated a prototype electric passenger van version of Ford Tourneo Connect, which is closely tied to Ford Transit Connect. Ford initially announced Smith Electric Vehicles will install electric drivetrains and lithium-ion battery packs in vehicles, but they then partnered with Azure Dynamics Corporation instead, with Johnson Controls-Saft as a battery supplier.
The production of Transit Connect Electric began in December 2010, and Azure Dynamics is the official producer of the recording. The official range of the US Environmental Protection Agency is 56 mi (90 km) and has a combined city/road fuel economy rating of 62 miles per gallon of gas equivalent (3.8 L/100 sq. Km) based on a five-cycle test using various conditions and climate control. The electric van is worth $ 57,400 , which is more than double the price of a gas-powered version even after federal and state or local incentives for electric vehicles are discounted.
Transit Connect X-Press
In 2004, Ford Europe created the Ford Transit Connect X-Press, based on a pre-production Transit Connect prototype and 2.0L 2.0hp engine from Ford Focus RS. Using a short-range cargo van with a rear lift post, the X-Press is equipped with a front suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and a steering wheel from the Focus RS. The cargo space is equipped with a body roll frame along with two spare tires.
During 2006, Transit Connect X-Press saw minor exterior changes to better reflect the production vehicle.
Tourneo Connect
The Ford Tourneo Connect is a recreational activity vehicle manufactured by Ford, which was first put into production in 2002 to the UK market. Just as Tourneo is a passenger version of Transit, Tourneo Connect is designed with windows and rear seats. In principle called commercial vehicles, Ford predicts relatively low sales between 800-1000 mainly for taxi operators, due to the status given as commercial vehicles. However, Ford described Connect as a 'dual use' vehicle, equally capable of meeting business and leisure needs. It was put into production to rival similar models from CitroÃÆ'Â · n Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Volkswagen Caddy, Fiat DoblÃÆ'² and Opel/Vauxhall Combo Tour.
The Connect, when first sold, is the only vehicle of its kind that offers separate and detachable 60/40 detached rear seats that allow for multiple seating formations and increased load capacity. It also boasts a twin side sliding option as well as a back door or rear door, whereas no major competitor has this option. Design Connect emphasizes Ford's ideals that the vehicle is multipurpose.
Electricity
Ford presents Ford Tourneo Connect electric concept vehicle at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. It features 21 kWh lithium iron phosphate batteries, 50 kW permanent magnet motor, and a single speed transmission, for distances of up to 160 kilometers (99 mi) and a top speed of about 113 kilometers per hour (70 mph). The BEV technology was developed in collaboration with Smith Electric Vehicles.
