A bus hired by Vietnamese pilgrims crashed in Texas on Friday 8 August 2008, killing at least 17 people and injuring dozens more, police said. The bus, carrying 55 people, drove past the overpass in the northern US, 75 shortly after midnight and crashed near the town of Sherman, Texas, about 64 miles (103 kilometers) north of Dallas.

Sherman police said the tires blown on the bus may have caused the driver to lose control. Local media said the group came from the Vietnamese Martyrs' Church, Our Lady of Lavang, and Our Lady of Lourdes in Houston, Texas. The bus is one of three buses that take Vietnamese Catholics on their way to the annual Marian Day celebrations in Carthage, Missouri in honor of the Virgin Mary. The bus tire seems to be over; the charter bus company has a history of security breaches, and the driver has a criminal record. Bus owners identified as Iguala BusMex Inc.

After the accident, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration temporarily stopped issuing the license of the new bus company.

The bus does not have a seat belt. Some people are calling for mandatory seat belts and safety glasses on highway coaches.
