The Professional Truck Driver Institute ( PTDI ) is a non-profit organization that certifies training courses for commercial motor vehicle drivers. It was formed in 1986 during the standardization of commercial driver licenses by the Federal Carrier Safety Administration in the United States. Its management was taken over by TCA in 1996. PTDI is the first nonprofit organization to develop uniform skills, curriculum and certification standards for the trucking industry and to provide course certification for beginner-level truckers and motorists drivers-completing the program.

PTDI now works with NATMI, another non-profit transportation industry educational institution.

History and overview

The Professional Truck Driver Institute is a nonprofit organization that offers certification courses for tractor-trailer driver training courses requiring basic and safe operation theory and behind-wheel training of an 18-wheel tractor-trailer combination. Certification courses are offered by private and publicly funded schools and require written and driving tests (skills and competency tests). After passing the exam with the Department of Transportation, both State, and Federal is regulated in the United States, the successful candidate received the Class-A CDL, (Commercial Driver License), formerly known as Chauffeur license.

In the United States, federal law is enacted to consolidate record keeping of many different State Department Transportations. During this time, the debate continues on the need for organizations capable of training administration for the safety of commercial vehicle operators. Created in 1986, PTDI is a non-profit charity organization that is regularly tested by transport officers for the skills and standards of the curriculum. Each candidate for a CDL class license is taught to familiarize yourself with local, regional, state, and national laws governing commercial motor transport.

Standardization of the commercial license class is adopted by all countries under federal action. For example, in Texas, an earlier commercial class license called a "Driver" license was converted into a multi-grade CDL, distinguishing between Class A, Class B, endorsement, and noncommercial Class C licenses.

The rigorous application of candidates seeking a commercial motor certification support for their CDL may come from statistics showing a significant percentage of PTDI certified drivers trained by rehabilitation services for convicted prisoner release programs. Since rehabilitation to community for individuals after being released from prison is a concern for social services, much of the focus on placement is to prevent recurring violations. PTDI does not discriminate, although there are personal fees for FBI background checks, and local DOT fingerprinting when candidates want certain support with their CDL. PTDI offers an intensive safety indoctrination for all licensing candidates.

CDL Training Future

  • PTDI's focus on extensive safety training may require the inclusion of more qualification support training in the near future. DOT regulatory trends are aimed at identifying individuals who are not eligible to operate commercial vehicles on public roads. In addition to the PTDI curriculum developed with the help of law enforcement, prospective employees must undergo a medical examination, random drug testing, random vehicle inspection, intermittent vehicle clearance, vehicle registration, and operator competency assessment.
  • Be in the DOT's technical capabilities to require GPS monitoring, initial mechanisms of breathing analyzers, voice-driven mechanisms, DNA testing, retina scanners, operator/vehicle sharpening, personality assessment, and individual character profiles.
  • Although the current course of PTDI is an introduction, institute training requirements may change with the help of law enforcement, as future rules are enforced.
