The Major Deegan Expressway , officially named Major William Francis Deegan Expressway and locally known as the Deegan , is a north-south toll road in New Borough city of York in the Bronx. It is the southernmost 8.70 miles (14,00 km) Interstate 87 (I-87), starting at I-278 at the intersection of the Bruckner Expressway and Triborough Bridge in the southern Bronx and ending at the Westchester County line in Yonkers, where New The York State Thruway begins. In between, the Major Deegan Expressway winds through Van Cortlandt Park, intersecting with I-95 (Bronx Cross Road) near the George Washington Bridge, and past Yankee Stadium on its east side.

The motorway was completed in 1956 and became part of the I-87 when the highway was designated as part of the manufacture of the Interstate Highway System in 1957. Named for William Francis Deegan, who died in 1932. He was an architect, a Major in Army Corps of Engineers and a Democratic political leader in New York City.

Route description

The major Deegan Expressway starts at the intersection with Bruckner Expressway (I-278) in South Bronx. The path leads northwest from the intersection, loosely balancing the Harlem River as it carries the I-87 through Mott Haven. After 1 mile (1.6 km), the highway turns north, reflecting changes in the nearby river. It passes Yankee Stadium on the way to Highbridge, where Deegan connects to the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95 and US Route 1 or US 1) on the east approach to Alexander Hamilton Bridge. Deegan stays near the Harlem River until the waterway turns westward in Kingsbridge to form the northern edge of Manhattan.

North of Kingsbridge, I-87 and the Major Deegan Expressway follow a general direction of the northeast, passing through the center of Van Cortlandt Park as it is connected to Mosholu Parkway and Jerome Avenue. Mosholu Parkway also connects Deegan to Henry Hudson and Saw Mill River parkways, which parallel the Major Deegan Expressway through western Bronx and Manhattan. In Jerome Avenue's past, the highway gained a pair of service roads and headed north to the New York City line, where it became the New York State Thruway as it passed Westchester County. The last north exit on Deegan is connected to McLean Avenue, which is north of the city line in Yonkers. Exit 14 leads to a service ramp in the Bronx but does not meet McLean Avenue until crossing the county line. Access south to McLean Avenue is provided by Thruway exit 1 at Yonkers.

History

The origin of the Major Deegan Expressway dates back to 1936 when the Association of Regional Plans concluded that to alleviate the traffic problems of New York City, access was limited, toll roads accessible to trucks had to be built on the west side of the Bronx. This route will connect the new Triborough Bridge to the proposed New York State Thruway in Westchester County. A 1.5-mile (2.4 km) section of the highway from the bridge to the Grand Concourse was completed in April 1939. The highway was adorned with Whitestone-style light posts placed every 75 feet (23 m) from the highway 6- lane, each of which is 12 feet (3.7 m) wide. This toll road is designated as New York State 1B Route (NYÃ, 1B) c. 1941 ; However, the title was removed in 1947.

In 1945, the proposed public works planner Robert Moses extended the highway to the proposed Thruway. Construction of the extension began in 1950, and a new route was opened in 1956. Deegan became part of I-87 when the highway was defined as part of the creation of the Interstate Toll Road system in August 1957.

After the death of former York Yankees player Joe DiMaggio on March 8, 1999, Governor George Pataki proposed renaming the Deegan Toll Road to "Joe DiMaggio Highway". However, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani prefers to change the name of the West Side Highway to DiMaggio. Pataki approves Giuliani's proposal one week later.

On January 4, 2014, a "fixed machine Piper PA28 single" made an emergency landing on the highway, near exit 13.
