History

In 1928, Hubert "Hub" van Doorne established the company as Commanditaire Vennootschap Hub van Doorne Machinefabriek . Co-founder and investor is A.H. Huenges, the managing director of the brewery. Van Doorne has repaired Huenges's car several times. Huenges is very pleased with the work he offers to finance his business. Hub started working on a small workshop at the bottom of the brewery.

In 1932, the company, now run by Hub and his brother, Wim van Doorne, changed its name to Van Doorne Aanhangwagen Fabriek (Van Doorne Trailer Factory), abbreviated to DAF . Huenges left the company in 1936 and the DAF company is now entirely in the hands of the Doorne van brothers.

DAF developed the Trado conversion to convert 4ÃÆ' â € "2 Ford trucks to the off off drive 6ÃÆ' â €" 4. One of the few armored vehicles belonging to DAF is M39 Pantserwagen, using the development of this Trado drivetrain. It was too late for World War II and the Dutch invasion, and only three saw the battle.

After the Second World War, luxury cars and lorries were very rare. This means a great opportunity for DAF. In 1949, the company began making lorries, trailers and buses, changing its name to Van Doorne's Automobiel Fabriek (Van Doorne Car Factory). The first truck model is DAF A30.

During the 1950s, DAF was the main supplier to replenish the Dutch Army softskin vehicle, with models such as DAF YA-126 and DAF YA-328 'Dikke Daf'. It uses a H all-wheel drive drive developed from the Trado conversion.

At the end of 1954, Hub van Doorne had the idea of using a belt drive, much like many machines in a belt-driven factory, to drive vehicles on the road. In 1955, DAF produced the first design of the belt drive system. Over the next few years, the design is developed and refined. In February 1958, DAF demonstrated a small belt driven by four passenger cars at the Dutch auto show (AutoRAI).

Public reaction is very positive and 4000 cars are booked. In 1959, DAF began selling the world's first car with continuous variable transmission, DAF 600 with four small seats. This is the first of a series of models to be released in subsequent years, including DAF 33, DAF 44, DAF 55 and DAF 66, all using an innovative Variatif transmission system.

In 1967, DAF opened a new factory in Born for automobile production. The 44 is the first model produced there.

In 1972, the International Harvester of Chicago, IL bought a 33% stake in DAF (with the Dutch government holding 25% and the Van Doorne family holding the remaining 42%), forming a joint venture. This deal lasted until 1981. DAF sold its passenger car division, together with what is now NedCar's plant in Born, in 1975 to Swedish company Volvo Cars, leaving DAF to concentrate on its successful lorry path.

In 1987, DAF joined the Leyland Trucks division of the Rover Group, and floated on the Dutch stock exchange as DAF NV . The new company is traded as Leyland DAF in the UK, and as DAF elsewhere.

DAF Bus was separated in 1990 to become part of United Bus. After difficulties in the UK market, DAF NV went bankrupt in June 1993. A new company, DAF Trucks, appeared in the Netherlands as a result of purchasing Dutch operations management, as did Leyland. Trucks and LDV (van) in UK.

In October 1996, PACCAR acquired DAF Trucks. DAF Trucks and Leyland Trucks rejoined in June 1998, when PACCAR also acquired Leyland Trucks. On January 9, 2012, PACCAR installed a new plant foundation in the city of Ponta Grossa, in the state of ParanÃÆ'¡, Brazil.

Business car

The first passenger car, DAF 600, has a unified steel construction, with front mounted, air cooled two-cylinder boxer engine that drives the rear wheels through centrifugal clutches and CVT Varietal transmissions. This constructed way eliminates the need for differential, with drivebelts taking a speed difference in bends.

It acts as a limited differential slip. The car has an all-round independent suspension, with MacPherson struts and leaf springs across the front, and a semi trailing arm coil design popping up on the back. The first 600 years rolled off the production line the following year. The next model is 750, featuring a larger 749 cc (45.7 cuÃ, in) twin.

Then, DAF produces a more luxurious type called Daffodil, divided into three models numbered DAF 30, DAF 31 and DAF 32. The tagging 32 was changed to 33 in the 1966 release of 44, a larger middle-class vehicle designed by Giovanni Michelotti.

The 44 showcases a completely new design aesthetically or mechanically, but has the same layout as "Type A" (600, 750, 30, 31, 32 and 33), with the main difference being 850 cc (52 cuà , In) a two-cylinder engine, and a full swingaxle rear axle design as opposed to a semi trailing arms type A.

The 1968 DAF 55 carries a larger water cooled 1,108 cc (67.6 cuÃ, in) OHV four-cylinder engine derived from a Renault 8 Cleon engine. The body design was changed from 44 by the new front that accommodates the longer engines and radiators, larger rear lights, and more luxurious interiors. The front suspension is changed from the leaf springs across to MacPherson struts with torsion spring and antiroll bar.

The DAF 66 was introduced as the 55th successor. It featured new styling, front boxy, and a new rear axle design. The two belt drives are now powered differential, and the shaft is changed from the swingaxle design to the leaf shaft popping de Dion. It was a major improvement over the (complicated) handling of the swing axle of 33, 44 and 55 of the previous model.

Volvo acquired a 33 percent stake in DAF in December 1972, with the intention of taking a larger interest. They increased their holdings to 75% on January 1, 1975, taking over the NedCar company and factory. Volvo lowered the 33 and 44 models, and then reversed the DAF 66 as a Volvo 66, with a larger bumper and a secure steering wheel.

DAF 46 was developed with the help of Volvo, and is essentially 44 with a rear axle 66 and a single belt Variomatic (half transmission 66). The big disadvantage of this system is that a failing belt will paralyze the car. The final DAF design, codenamed P900, was originally intended to be DAF 77, developed during the transition to Volvo ownership and finally launched as the Volvo 300 series in 1976, first as a three-door Volvo 343 hatchback with a Variomatic transmission.

After a slow initial sale, the range expanded to 340/360, with a five-door variant and the availability of a manual transmission, and the 340/360 range became a successful sale, eventually surpassing 1.3 million units when production ceased 1991. Furthermore Volvo 440/460/480 and the first-generation S40/V40 models were also manufactured at NedCar's plant, until Volvo sold interest to Mitsubishi Motors in 2001, marking the end of Volvo's engagement with the former DAF factory after nearly thirty years. Today, the factory is now owned by VDL NedCar, and the contract produces a certain MINI model for BMW.

Prototype and special car

For small companies, DAF makes a large number of prototypes. Also, renowned coach builders like Giovanni Michelotti and OSI make cars based on DAF techniques. For example, OSI City Car, which turned into a miniature. There is also Michelotti's "Shellette" beach car, which was later modified to use the foundation of Fiat 850. The Royal Dutch family used one of them at their summer residence of Porto Ercole.

Trucking business

DAF produced their first truck, the A30, in 1949. The truck was upgraded in the following years. Their first attempt to international market is failure, 2000DO. The next truck is 1964 2600, which becomes a big seller with its practical but practical cabin. They also produce front torpedo tractors.

In the 1970s, a new modular tilt taxi called F218 was introduced on a range of F1600/F2000 vehicles. Three years later, the wider F241, which features the characteristics of three DAF airborne glass, was introduced as DAF 2800. This design lasted until the introduction of the 95-style cabin in 1987. There is also a lighter and narrower version called F198 which was introduced in 1972 on the F1200 and F1400, but this short-lived model was replaced after only three years. In 1984, the production of DAF trucks was 13,645; this increased to 14,382 in calendar year 1985.

DAF is also one of the first to introduce turbocharged diesel engines between engines into their lorries, which in these years became very real with their 3600s. Their six-cylinder six-cylinder engine with a capacity of 11.6 liters (710 cuÃ, in) six cylinders is based on Leyland O. 680 motor. It became a large DAF standard engine into the nineties.

The 95 Series DAF was launched in 1987, and quickly gained the coveted "Truck of the Year" award. 95 features all newly developed cabin together with ENASA from Spain, a revised version of an 11.6 liter ATI engine, rated at 310, 350, and 380 Bhp, and a 16 speed ZF gearbox. On the Continent Eaton Twinsplitter gearbox is an option. A wide range of shaft configurations is offered, to meet any operating requirements.

Much attention is given to soundproof, telescopic eg gitoripage, in the cabin noise level at 95 placing many luxury salons to shame. The update in 1991 saw the new power ratings of 329, 364, and 401 Bhp, - variants of 430 Bhp, along with models of low-deck tractor units and revised interior trims, introduced in spring 1992.

Two years later, after intensive study of the ultra long haul market sector, DAF launched 95,500 Super Spacecabs at the 1994 RAI show. The 95 series cabin has gained height and length, and sits on a 14-liter N14 Cummins, rated at 507 Bhp. The new ZF Aluminum cased 16S221 gearbox is fitted, with optional Intarder, the innovation is hydraulic gearshift developed with Konsberg from Norway.

In an overall height of 3.85 m, Super boasts an interior 2.25 m standing height, a luxurious bed with generous storage underneath, and a range of options including a microwave, fridge and a television/video system. The 95.500 is available as a 4x2 tractor or rigid drawbar, with only LHD, although Super Spacecab is available on 11.6 liter engine models, and sold well. The 95,500 is now a very rare truck, which is surprising given the original list price of Ã, £ 87,650.

The basic cabin design remains in production to date, the latter as the 95XF and now the XF105, although both developments from the original 95 are completely different machines under the skin. Other vehicles within range of DAF have included those inherited from Leyland Trucks Roadrunner (Badged DAF 600, 800, 1000 on the Continent) that evolved into the 45 Series, taxis used on 18 gross 55 tons, as well as military specifications 4ÃÆ' â € "4.

The medium to the new middle class debuted at the end of 1992, 65, 75, and 85 using the same wedge-shaped cabin. Powered by 6.24 liter engine (381 cuÃ, in), 8.65-liter (528 cuÃ, in) and 11.6-liter (710Ã, Â ° cuÃ, in), some new style details are shown, while the 85 Series cabin sits 10cm (3.94 inches). ) is higher on the chassis to clean the WS engine.

The short-lived model was the 1990 to 1993 80 Series, using a T45 Roadtrain taxi that was acquired from a Leyland Trucks takeover, which was equipped with an ATI driveline. Also offered for short period is 3200, basically 2800 renovated with corporate style, three bar grille.

There is a DAF LF45 hybrid version, presented by DAF at IAA 2010 in Hannover.

Tatra

In August 2011, DAF announced it has built a 19% stake in Tatra, which will use DAF taxis and PACCAR engines. DAF dealers will sell Tatra offroad lorries.
