Belvidere is a city in Boone County, Illinois, United States. The population is 25,585 at the 2010 census. It is a county seat in Boone County. Belvidere is part of the Rockford, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography
Belvidere is located on 42Ã, à ° 15? 17? N 88Ã, à ° 50? 39? W (42.254758, -88.844093), and sits at an altitude of about 800 feet (240 m) above sea level. Located in northern Illinois, Belvidere is about 75 miles (121 km) northwest of downtown Chicago, and about 12 miles (19 km) east of Rockford. Belvidere is divided by the Kishwaukee River.
According to the 2010 census, Belvidere has a total area of ââ12.312 square miles (31.89 km 2 ), which is 12.08 square miles (31.29 km 2 ) (or 98, 12%) is ground and 0.232 square miles (0.60 km 2 ) (or 1.88%) is water. Belvidere is located north of central Illinois and is 75 miles from downtown Chicago on Route 20, 76 and the Northern Illinois Toll Road, with the Kishwaukee River that divides the city. Belvidere is an industrial community surrounded by prosperous agriculture. This is the County Seat with an estimated population of 2006 over 52,000. At an altitude of 800 feet above sea level, the average temperature is: 73 degrees F in summer; 24 degrees F in winter, and an average rainfall of 33.3 inches.

Demographics
In the 2000 census, there were 20,820 people, 7,531 households, and 5,324 families living in the city. Population density was 2,295.3 persons per square mile (886.3/km ò). There are 7,970 housing units with an average density of 878.6 per square mile (339.3/km ò). City's racial makeup is 64.53% White, 1.15% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Island, 11.57% of other races, and 1.92 % of two or more races. Hispanic or Latin of any race is 26.07% of the population.
There are 7,531 households in which 38.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a housewife with no husband present, and 29.3 % is not a family. 24.8% of all households are individuals and 11.2% have a single person who is 65 or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.26.
In the city the population spread with 29.7% performances under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% 65 ages years or more. The average age is 32 years. For every 100 women, there are 97.2 men. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 94.7 men.
The average income for households in the city is $ 42,529, and the average income for families is $ 50,601. Men have an average income of $ 37,116 compared to $ 24,454 for women. The per capita income for the city is $ 17,804. About 7.8% of families and 10.0% of the population are below the poverty line, including 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 8.0% of those aged 65 and older.
History
The location where Belvidere existed today was first settled in 1835 by Simon P. Doty and Mr. Whitney, who named the location next to the Kishwaukee River "Elysian Fields". The name now is after Schloss Belvedere in Germany. Belvidere was originally built on the north side of the river. In 1851, a railroad was built south of the river, its business section continues to the south side of the river, where Belvidere's downtown is now located. Belvidere was home to the National Sewing Machine Company from 1886 to the 1940s.
tornado 1967
On April 21, 1967, a devastating tornado attacked Belvidere. Twenty-four souls were lost in tornadoes, many of whom were schoolchildren. Tornado F4 struck at the end of the school day Belvidere High School, while many children including those who attended the local class schools were waiting for school buses outside high school. Of the sixteen school buses outside of secondary school, twelve are upside down or thrown off. Tornado did $ 22 million damage, destroyed more than 100 homes, and injured over 300. In 2007, a statue was erected in front of Belvidere High School to commemorate the lost life.
Blast 2009
On December 7, 2009 there was an explosion at the NDK America building. A truck driver from Indiana at the Commission's Northern Tollway Beleshere Oasis was killed by flying debris. The shock wave of the explosion shook the ceiling and doors in the area. The cause is found in corrosion of an iron vessel used in the crystallization process of NDK quartz by high pressure sodium hydroxide inside the vessel, causing catastrophic failure.
Culture
The Pettit Memorial Chapel, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Lampert-Wildflower House, and James Knox Taylor designed by Belvidere Post Office are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park includes Spencer Park, Belvidere Municipal Park, and Boone County Fairgrounds. Belvidere is known as the "City of Murals", because of its many murals. The fictional character series Left Behind, Rayford Steele was born there.
Services
Belvidere used to have two hospitals, St. Joseph Hospital and Highland Hospital, both of which were once recently closed, with the closure of St. John's. Joseph in 1999. In 2008, SwedishAmerican Hospital opened the hospital, and in 2009, they renovated and reopened former Highland Hospital, which has the only city emergency department. The cemetery includes Belvidere Cemetery (the cemetery of Richard S. Molony) and St. James Catholic Cemetery. The nearest public airport is the Poplar Grove Airport, formerly known as Belvidere Airport. Schools include Belvidere High School, Belvidere High School North, Belvidere Endeaver High School, Belvidere South Central School, Belvidere Central Central School, Kishwaukee Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, Perry Elementary School, Meehan Elementary School, Caledonia Primary School, Seth Whitman Foundation, and one academy, Washington Academy which is part of the Belvidere Public Library Community Unit School District 100. This Belvidere, Ida Public Library, was formed in 1883. The current building, the Carnegie Library, was built in 1912 and opened in 1913, with additional built in 1987. This includes adult and children services, Local History and Genealogy Room, and Internet/computer access.
Business
Chrysler operates the Belvidere Assembly Plant, a car assembly plant, originally built in the mid-1960s. The Belvidere factory produced Dodge Neon until spring 2005. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the factory was producing Chrysler Newports and Plymouth Furys. After a massive restructuring of the Belvidere plant, it is now one of the most modern automobile assembly plants in the United States. It produces Dodge Dart, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot.
