Van Buren is the second largest city in Fort Smith, the Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area and the county district of Crawford County, Arkansas, USA. The town is located just to the north-east of Fort Smith at the intersection of Interstate 40Ã,Ã Interstate 540. The city was founded in 1845 and at the 2010 census had a population of 22,791, ranking it as the 22nd largest city state, behind Searcy.

Histori

The area was occupied by David Boyd and Thomas Martin in 1818. After Arkansas became a territory in 1819, Daniel and Thomas Phillips built a wooden yard in the community to serve as a fuel depot for traffic along the Arkansas River. In 1831 a post office was built for the community, then known as Phillips Landing. The post office is named after the newly appointed Secretary of State, Martin Van Buren.
John Drennen, along with his partner David Thompson, bought the area for US $ 11,000. They move their business to supply firewood to steamers to this new location in a higher place. The courthouse was built on much of the land donated by Drennen on condition that Van Buren be the county seat. The Drennen Reserve is one of the city's historical sites that existed from the 1830s.
Van Buren was founded on January 4, 1845.
American Civil War
On December 28, 1862, Unity and Confederate forces clashed in and around Van Buren resulting in the defeat of Major General T. C. Hindman, pushing him south across the river with minimum casualties. Federal forces arrested 100 detainees, as stated in an official report by US Major General Samuel R. Curtis.
tornado 1996
On April 21, 1996, at 11:00 pm, an F3 tornado category hit the Fort Smith/Van Buren area causing major damage. The tornado, which gave birth in Oklahoma and crossed into western Fort Smith near the Arkansas and Poteau river meetings, killed two people, injured 89 and caused $ 300 million worth of damage. The casualties are small children from Fort Smith. At worst, a tornado is a mile and a half across. After leaving downtown Fort Smith, he marched northeast through the industrial and residential section of northern Fort Smith, then crossed the Arkansas River again to the Mount Vista area on the west side of Van Buren and damaged a very high residential area where no casualties were happen. , although the area is very crowded at that time. Van Buren is located in the southwest corner of Crawford County on 35Ã, à ° 26? 40? N 94Ã, à ° 20? 48? W (35,444339, -94,346737). The Arkansas-Oklahoma country line is 2 miles (3 km) to the west. The Arkansas River forms the southern boundary of the city, separating it from Fort Smith, Sebastian County. Lee Creek flows through the western side of the city to the Arkansas River. According to the US Census Bureau, Van Buren has a total area of ââ16.5 square miles (42.7 km 2 ), which is 15.4 square miles (40.0 km 2 ) is ground and 1.0 square miles (2.7 km 2 ), or 6.34%, is water.

Van Buren is located in a humid subtropical climate area. The city is also located at the eastern end of the region known as Tornado Alley. Average temperatures range from 36 à ° F in January, to an average high of 81 à ° F in July with temperatures reaching the high 90s and low 100s in August. The average annual temperature is about 60 à ° F. The average rainfall is about 41 inches in total, with only six inches to snow.

In the 2000 census, there were 18,986 people, 6,947 households, and 5,182 families living in the city. Population density is 1,260.7 people per square mile (486.8/km ò). There are 7,427 units of homes with an average density of 493.2 per square mile (190.4/km ò). City's racial makeup is 87.37% White, 1.64% Black or African American, 1.96% Native Americans, 2.82% Asian, 3.17% of other races, and 3.03% of two or more race. 6.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino from any race.
There are 6,947 households, of which 40.4% have children under 18 living with them, 56.2% are couples living together, 14.7% have non-husbands female households, and 25.4% are classified as not family by the US Census Bureau. Of 6,947 households, 362 unmarried partner households: 304 heterosexuals, 12 men of the same sex, and 46 same-sex households. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone 65 or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population is spread by 29.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% years or more. The mean age is 33 years. For every 100 women, there are 92.0 men. For every 100 women age 18 and over, there are 86.8 men.
The average income for households in the city is $ 33,608, and the average income for families is $ 37,198. Men have an average income of $ 28,798 compared to $ 21,201 for women. The per capita income for the city is $ 14,948. Approximately 13.5% of families and 16.7% of the population are below the poverty line, including 24.4% of those under the age of 18 and 13.0% of those aged 65 and older.
Economy and infrastructure
Van Buren is home to many large companies within the state and employs many inhabitants of the city within the Port and Industrial Park area. Manufacturing, food processing, and medicine are sustaining the industry in Van Buren. Major employers include Tyson Foods and Simmons poultry, Van Buren School District, USA Truck, and Sparks Medical Center - Van Buren.

Art and architecture
Van Buren is the home of the King Opera House, a Victorian-style performance hall from the late 19th century, part of the historic center of the old city. At the southern end of the historic downtown is the Crawford County courthouse, the oldest court building west of the Mississippi River. To the north is Old Frisco Station which was originally a station on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, pictured at the top of this page.
Media
As part of the main Fort Smith metropolitan area, many Fort Smith-based television stations include KHBS and KFSM, whose radio poles are built in Van Buren, providing local news and weather. The main city newspaper is Van Buren Press Argus-Courier , but many people also read Fort Smith Southwest Time Record , and the Northwest Edition of Arkansas Democrat-Sheet .
Transportation
The Van Buren location at Interstate 40 intersection, Interstate 540, and the Arkansas/Oklahoma border resulted in a huge tourism and hospitality industry. The city is also located at the intersections of several US states and highways including Arkansas Highway 59, US 64, and US 71. A private airport, Twin Cities Airport (code 39AR), operates in the southeast of the city, but has been closed for years. Modern railroads in the city include Arkansas and Missouri Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad.
Education
The Van Buren School District is the largest school district in Crawford County, consisting of six elementary schools (K-5 classes), two secondary schools (grades 6-8), one ninth grade (9th grade) and one high school (10th grade -12). The Van Buren High School is at 6A/7A-Central Division of Arkansas high school sports.
