Subaru Steel is an all-wheel-drive pickup truck, four passengers, four doors, open produced from 2002 to 2006 by Subaru and marketed for models from 2003 to 2006. The Steel combines Handling and passenger carrying characteristics of traditional passenger cars with the flexibility of open beds, and to a lesser extent, the carrying capacity of pickup trucks.

Unibody design is borrowed from mechanics, platforms and metal sheets in the Subaru Legacy/Outback train. Production began on July 18, 2002 as a 2003 model at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. plant. in Lafayette, Indiana.

The Steel signboard comes from the peninsula marking Mexico with the same name - the house for off-road Steel Bike 1000.

Design and techniques

Working with technical support from Subaru Japan, a team led by Peter Tenn, Subaru's senior designer, writes Steel in the United States. According to an August 2002 interview with Tenn, "the stubborn look of Steel is a tribute to a racecourse truck. It should look funky, look different. It does not fit into any category, and we know what's coming in. It's not like things on the road, and that's important to many people. "

Steel follows carefully the Subaru's ST-X (Sport Truck X-perimental Sport) concept car, presented at the Los Angeles International Automotive Exhibition 2000 and also designed by the special Subaru America design team. ST-X offers better complementary features than Steel production (power rear window, under floor storage compartment, tailgate cup holder), but still sets the production base for an Outback-based, four-door, car-truck hybrid.

In a 150 mm (6 inches) longer package than Outback, Steel features a four-door passenger compartment along with 1,040 mm (41 inches) in the open bed and tailgate drop-down. A system that is marketed as "Switchback" allows the rear passenger seat to fold and small hatch from the open bed to fold inward, allowing an extended length of 1,900 mm (75 inches) to the rear end of the open door. Light in the instrument cluster indicates an "open" status for Switchback. This design features two stainless steels that are displayed behind the passenger compartment, marketed as Sports Bars, providing structural strengthening for the open bed.

Detailed features include colored rear door windows and rear windows; integrated bedding; double lamp illumination; four bed tie hooks; molded-in recesses to accept standard 2x4 to allow for special storage (eg, bi-level); standard roof rail with crossbar; a 2,400-pound (1,089 kg) tow rating, a rear-centered rear seat compartment seat with integral twin cupholders, rear seat power supply, central rear seat storage, front-seat pocket behind each seat; a spare tire mounted under the bed can be operated through a cable winch accessible from the access panel on the bed itself and a flip-up plate holder with a mechanism allowing the plates to lock perpendicularly to the tailgate, so that with tailgate lowered, the plates still visible - mimics the arrangement of the truck and the license plate on an older station wagon/plantation with tailgates biparting, for example, Volvo Amazon.

Market and sales

Subaru markets Baja in the United States, Canada, South Africa, and Chile. In the United States and Canada, Subaru dubbed Steel as a "multiple choice vehicle" as a result of its unique design and versatility. But advertising is limited, the delay of the turbo-charged model, the highly stylish undercoat plastic coating, and the yellow-and-silver introductory color scheme ignore the broad appeal. James Healey, writing for USAtoday at the introduction of Steel called it "a controversial fashion statement with limited utility".

Steel received the APEAL Award (for Automotive Performance, Implementation and Layout) JD Powers 2003 and 2004 - measure the excitement of the owners with the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles for "Most Compelling Pickup Compact" and Consumer Reports 2006 highest score for reliability in pickup truck category.

With Subaru projecting to sell 24,000 per year, 30,000 is marketed for four and a half years.

In 2007, Subaru of America reached an agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation that allows Subaru Indiana to produce Camry to meet Toyota's overbooking - and allows Subaru to re-establish its Steel production line and maximize plant utilization.

Subaru stopped production of Steel in April 2006. Subaru piled up the 2006 model inventory before stopping production, allowing dealers to continue selling the 2006 model until the end of February 2008. Steel was moved from the Subaru USA website on July 31, 2007, following its removal from the Subaru Chile website on April 2007.
