Histori

The company traced its origins to 1934 when Earl and Lillian Congdon founded the company with a truck that runs between Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia.

After Earl Congdon died, Lillian Congdon occupied the presidency and joined the sons of Earl Jr. and Jack. In 1957, Old Dominion expanded its operations into most markets in North Carolina and southern Virginia. Five years later, the company moved its headquarters to High Point, North Carolina, in 1962 and joined the Bottoms-Fiske trucking company.

Between 1969 and 1979, the company acquired a number of competing truck lanes. With the deregulation of the truck industry in the 1980s, Old Dominion expanded its service area to Florida, Tennessee and California and also began serving the major markets of Chicago and Dallas.

The company went public in 1991.

David Congdon, grandson of the company founder, named president and COO in 1997. Currently, he is Vice Chairman and CEO of the company. His father, Earl Congdon Jr., is the company's chief executive. Greg C. Gantt serves as President and Chief Operating Officer.

The company offers assembly and distribution services as well as LCL and FCL shipping services to and from across North America, Central America, South America and the Far East.

Business segment

The company has five main product groups: Domestic, Accelerated, People, Global, Home Service, and Technology. The core business segment for Old Dominion is the LTL carrier shipping service. Global offerings include full container load (FCL) and less container loading (LCL) services to the Caribbean, Europe, Far East, Central America and South America. Old Dominion also offers mobile household services, and trade show deliveries as part of an accelerated division to accommodate all logistical needs.

The company operates more than 5,800 tractors and more than 22,500 trailers.

Sustainability

Old Dominion is part of SmartWay Transport Partnership, a collaboration between cargo shippers, operators, and logistics companies to voluntarily achieve improved fuel efficiency and reduce emissions from freight transport. These technologies include wide-based tires, reduced road speed, idle reduction, auto tire inflation, better delivery logistics, improved aerodynamics and longer combination vehicles.
