Careers

After World War II, Rollins and his wife Kitty moved to Lewes, Delaware where he opened a Ford dealer. Rollins is aggressively expanding its business by buying other dealerships in Maryland and Virginia. During this time, he also began to help pioneer the concept of leasing cars.

In 1947, Rollins' older brother, O. Wayne Rollins, moved to Lewes from Georgia and joined him in business in Delaware. The following year, the brothers set up Rollins Broadcasting and purchased 1460 WRAD, an AM radio station based in a rural town [Radford, Virginia]. As television continues to disrupt traditional radio markets, Rollins Broadcasting takes advantage of the falling prices of radio stations by increasing its holdings and launching programs targeted to African-Americans. Rollins then developed a co-ordinated approach to advertising by purchasing billboards that allow it to offer multiple advertising spots to clients for their products. In 1956, Rollins Broadcasting expanded its business into television.

In 1961 John and Wayne Rollins took their public company. Over the next three years, the company's annual earnings exceed $ 9 million. In 1964, they used the proceeds of their public offering to organize a $ 60 million leveraged purchase from the Atlanta-based Orkin Destruction Company. Due to the ever-diverse business interests, the company changed its name to Rollins, Inc. In 1967, shares in the company were traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

In addition, John is a pioneer in the car rental business. He started what became Rollins Truck Leasing. Also during this time he acquired Matlack Systems, the largest bulk trucking company in the country, and started Rollins Purle which later became Rollins Environmental. In 1984, the interests of Rollins, Inc. has become so diverse that the company split two new companies, Rollins Communications and RPC Energy Services, Inc., both of which are traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

In addition, Rollins founded and cultivated Motorsport Dover as well as Dover Entertainment and brought them public on the New York Stock Exchange.

Although he received numerous awards including the Maltese knight, The Golden Plate Award, and was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame for some names, perhaps his most valuable confession was in 1963, when he was inducted into the Horatio Alger Association of Respected Americans. They value Rollins' revival from simple roots to excellence in the business world with their Horatio Alger Awards. Rollins worked hard at the Horatio Alger Association to help make it what it is today as the largest US-funded private scholarship for underprivileged students. His legacy was passed on by his sons and his wife, Michele.
