Irving Company is a private company; as a result, there is not much public information available because it will exist for public organizations. This lack of transparency has led to significant criticism and paranoia regarding Irving's business activities.
Irving companies are often criticized for their vertical integration. Examples of vertical integration in "Irving Group of Companies" (as Irving's family refers to their ownership) include acquisitions or business establishments throughout the entire production chain, from Irving's Irving refinery (Irving Oil subsidiary) and its retail outlet, to transportation subsidiary JD Irving ( RST, Midland, NB Southern, Sunbury), to various construction and engineering companies that assist in building, maintaining and expanding conglomerate facilities. Further examples of vertical integration in conglomerates include Industrial Security Ltd. (ISL), a wholly owned security company that maintains facilities, as well as industrial suppliers such as Thornes, Universal Sales and Commercial Equipment Ltd. which provides goods and services specific to the company. JD Irving, sister company for Irving Oil, is the dominant forestry company in northeastern North America, planting trees, harvesting trees and producing wood, pulp and paper, and value added products such as glossy paper, tissue and personal care products..
The Dominion newspaper, an independent Canadian newspaper, has criticized Irving's ownership of New Brunswick Papers, as well as the integrity of newspaper journalists, especially when reporting on companies controlled by the Irving family like Irving Oil. The Canadian Business magazine wrote in Irving Group's profile in 2008, "A Senate committee that recently investigated media ownership in Canada expressed concerns about the monopoly near the family over the provincial print media and" the implications of the dominant media power associated with the dominant industrial base. "While a Brunswick News official denied the pro-Irving bias in the paper coverage, a 2006 committee report quoted another witness who feared that Irving journalists refrained and edited when writing about the family -" unconscious allegiance to parental control, "as someone said."
In 2003, there were allegations of political patronage of the Irving family, especially those involving Allan Rock and Claudette Bradshaw of the Canadian Liberal Party.
