The American Truck Association ( ATA ), founded in 1933, is the largest national trafficking association for the trucking industry. ATA represents over 37,000 members covering every type of motor vehicle in the United States through federations from other trucking groups, industry-related conferences, and 50 affiliated trucking associations. Former Kansas Governor Bill Graves was replaced by Chris Spear as President and CEO of ATA in July 2016.

Histori
On September 23, 1933, the American Truck Association was established as a national affiliate of the state trucking organization. ATA was founded by the merger of the American Highway Freight Association and the Federation of American Truck Associations.
ATA begins with eight staff working from three suite rooms at the Transport Building in Washington, D.C. During World War II the Army asked personnel to recruit ATA for two quartermaster regiments that would become USS.Army Transportation Corps. With a call to the 350 members of the ATA Trucking Service War Council, 5,700 volunteer truck industry employees volunteered for registered positions and 258 volunteered for commissions. After the war, ATA was at the forefront of groups and industries that support the Interstate Toll Road System Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The American Trucking Association has been working on regulatory issues from the Fair Competition Code in 1934 to the recent industrial deregulation.
The ATA headquarters are in Arlington, Virginia. ATA has a legislative affairs office at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
In 2016, ATA named Chris Spear as the ninth federation president, replacing former Kansas Governor Bill Graves.

Organization
ATA is a trade association representing its members before the Congress, the executive branch, the courts, and regulatory bodies. This includes 50 state truck associations, two conferences and three councils. Each state association is an independent organization with its own membership, contribution structure, officers, budget and staff, but has representative and voting power in the federation. Like state associations, ATA conferences (each representing an industry segment) are autonomous organizations.
ATA is made up of members of the motor carrier and is governed by a representative council of elected operator representatives. Smaller executive committees consist of elected members who set policies and priorities. Allied members, representing suppliers to the trucking industry, also have representation within the organization. All ATA members are granted access to experts in the fields of security, engineering, law, finance, communications, information technology and logistics, legislation and legislative affairs, and a number of other service areas for the trucking industry.
As a member of the federation, the ATA council is dedicated to continuing education and policy in specialized truck disciplines including safety, maintenance, finance and accounting management, information technology, logistics, and more.
Policy
The ATA message revolves around three core areas: the essence of the trucking industry to the economy; ongoing industrial efforts and progress to improve road safety; and industry commitment to reduce carbon emissions and output.
Essentiality
ATA is an essential advocate of the trucking industry in the US economy. Trucks carry nearly 100 percent of consumer goods and more than 70 percent of all tonnage of goods in the United States. In addition, economists estimate that 80 percent of US people receive their goods exclusively by truck.
Economists expect the US population to grow by 27 million in the next 10 years, and overall cargo tonnage increased 26 percent by 2021, with the share of truck-transported modes rising to 71 percent. To keep pace with this growth, ATA is advocating capacity upgrades and improving road infrastructure at the country's worst traffic jam point to ensure efficient movement of goods.
Security
The ATA safety message focuses on three different key areas: improving driver performance, safer vehicles, and safer motor carriers. ATA believes that the trucking industry is safer than ever before, according to Military Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) truck mileage (VMT) travel numbers (VMT) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data. Since the new Jam-of-Service rule came into effect in 2004, the truck-related mortality rate has fallen by more than 20 percent and is at its lowest point since the US Department of Transport began keeping the records in 1975. Death rates have fallen more. from 66 percent since 1975. The trucking industry has also seen an increasing use of seat belts.
In 2008, ATA released a progressive 18 point security agenda to help further improve road safety. ATA recommends the following to improve safety through improved driver performance: uniform commercial driver license testing standards (CDL), additional parking facilities for trucks, national maximum speed limit of 65 mph, strategies to increase seat belt usage, increased use of red light cameras, and stricter laws to reduce drinking and driving. To make vehicles safer, ATA supports: the electronic speeds targeted to manage certain non-commercial vehicles, the electronic speeds that govern all the big trucks, and the standard of new large truck accidents. Finally, ATA promotes making motor operators safer through: national employer notification systems, national clearinghouses for positive drug and alcohol test results from CDL holders, and safety training required by newcomer vehicle operators.
Sustainability
ATA supports an environmental sustainability policy that provides the trucking industry in a realistic way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions without impeding essential freedom of movement for the US economy. ATA has six recommendations for reducing carbon emissions in the trucking industry: imposing a 65 mph national speed limit and adjusting truck speeds to 65 mph or lower, reducing idling, improving fuel efficiency, reducing congestion through road improvements, promoting more productive trucks combinations, and through the support of national fuel economy standards for medium and heavy trucks. This proposal together can reduce diesel fuel and gasoline consumption by 86 billion US gallons (330 million m 3 ) and CO2 emissions from all vehicles by nearly one billion tonnes over the next decade.
Also, ATA recommends that shipper and operators join the SmartWay Transport Partnership Program of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In 2009 ATA was awarded the SmartWay Excellence Award. In 2012, SmartWay Transport Partnership will cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 33 to 66 million metric tons per year.

Subsidiaries, conferences and councils
- Transportation Topics is a weekly national business publication published by the Transport Topics Publishing Group that includes truck and goods transport news. It is owned by ATA and has been published since 1935. According to the Circulation Audit Bureau, the publication has a payment circulation of around 30,000 in May 2007. The main reader consists of executives and managers involved in trucking, logistics and freight transport.
- The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) - According to its ATRI website "and its predecessor organization, the ATA Foundation has been involved in transportation studies and critical operational tests since 1954. ATRI's main mission is to conduct research in the field of transportation, with an emphasis on the role of important trucking industry in a safe, efficient, and viable transportation system ".
Conference
The ATA Conference brings together a group of member operators and motor suppliers in a particular line of business. The conference is open to all ATA members and has policy-making and advocacy powers in their field of operations.
- Car Carriers Conference covers issues related to transporting cars and trucks to manufacturers, dealers, and consumers.
- Conference of Food and Food Entrepreneurs deals with food, timber, natural resources, agricultural commodities, and supplies, both for hire and for personal use.
- Intermodal Motor Carriers Conference represents trucking operations at intermodal container handling ports.

Driver of the Year
The ATA National Driver of the Year Award recognizes one professional truck driver for its exemplary accomplishments and excellent driving attributes. Contestants for ATA awards start by winning at the corporate level and nominated by the state truck association.
At the national level, Driver of the Year Award is given to drivers whose professional qualifications, experience, and performance are noteworthy. A driver may be nominated for an extraordinary deed of heroism or courtesy; outstanding contributions to road safety, and/or a long record of safe and polite driving - or a combination of some or all of these. The neutral panel of judges from the trucking industry, government and law enforcement chose the winner.
Honor is regarded as one of the highest that can be accepted by a commercial truck driver. As an ATA National Driver of the Year award winners receive cash prizes, trophy and diamond pin collars at ATA Annual Awards Banquet.

Technology & amp; Board of Care
Technology & amp; The Maintenance Council (TMC) creates standards for maintenance techniques and practices.
For example, the Recommended Practice RP 243 says that the tire produces a way of using yellow and red dots on the tire rim to let the installer know the tire balance point.
Litigation
In 2013, the United States Supreme Court was held at American Trucking Ass'ns, Inc. v. City of Los Angeles that certain environmental requirements imposed by a city are preceded by federal law.
