A skilled worker is any worker who has specific skills, training, knowledge, and (usually acquired) skills in their work. A skilled worker may have gone to college, university or technical school. Or, skilled workers may have learned their skills at work. Examples of skilled labor include the development of software, paramedics, police officers, soldiers, doctors, crane operators, truck drivers, designers, painters, plumbers, craftsmen, cooks and accountants. These workers can be blue-collar or white-collar workers, with varying degrees of training or education.

History

In the northern regions of the United States, unions may have functioned as catalysts to develop strong solidarity in support of skilled workers in the Gilded Age period (1865-1900).

In the early 1880s, skilled trade unions who cooperated hand in hand with the Warrior of Labor, but the harmony did not last long and in 1885, the leadership of the Knights became hostile to the union. The Knights argue that the specialization of industrialization has undermined the bargaining power of skilled labor. This was partially true in the 1880s but has not made obsolete trade union existence.

The period between 1901 and 1925 marked the rise and fall of the American Socialist Party which depended on skilled workers. In 1906, with the publication of The Jungle, the voice of the most popular socialism of the early 20th century, Upton Sinclair gave them ignorance... Negroes and the lowest strangers - Greeks, Roumanians, Sicilians and Slovaks "hell.

There is a difference of status in the working class between skilled and unskilled workers due to the falling prices of some products and the increasing standard of living of skilled workers after the depression of 1929. Skilled workers were at the heart of the labor movement prior to World War I but during the 1920s they lost much enthusiasm they and the movement suffer for it.

In the 20th century, in Nazi Germany, the lower classes were divided into:

  • agricultural worker,
  • unskilled and semi-skilled workers,
  • skilled craft workers,
  • other skilled workers and
  • domestic workers.

After the end of World War II, West Germany surpassed France in employing the skilled workers needed as industrialization swept through Europe rapidly. The dominance of West Germany in the training of skilled workers in technical schools, is a major factor to offset the balance between the two countries. In the period between 1950 and 1970, the number of technicians and engineers in West Germany rose from 160,000 to around 570,000 by promoting skilled workers through the ranks so that those who did skilled work in 1950 had become technicians and engineers in 1970.

In the first decade of the 21st century, the average wage of a highly skilled engineer in the United States was $ 3,000 to $ 4,000 per month. In China, the average wage for factory workers is $ 150 per month.

Overview

While most, if not all, jobs require multiple skill levels, "skilled workers" bring some expertise to the performance of a given job. For example, a factory worker who checks a new television to check whether they turn on or off can fulfill a job with little or no knowledge of how the television works. However, someone who improves television will be considered a skilled worker, because such a person will have the knowledge to be able to identify and fix problems with the television.

In addition to the general use of the term, various agencies or governments, both federal and local, may require skilled workers to meet additional specifications. Such definitions may affect such matters as immigration, licensing and eligibility for travel or accommodation. For example, according to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the position of skilled workers is not seasonal or temporary and requires at least two years of experience or training.

Skilled jobs vary in type (service versus workforce), educational requirements (internships versus postgraduate courses) and availability (freelance vs. on-call). Differences Euch is often reflected in granting rights, opportunities, responsibilities and (most significant) salaries.

Both skilled and unskilled workers are very important and inseparable for the smoothness of free and/or capitalist market society. According to Alan Greenspan, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank, "Increasing the sensitivity of primary and secondary schools to market forces will help restore the balance between demand and supply of skilled workers in the United States."

In general, however, individual skilled workers are more valued for a particular company than individuals unskilled, because skilled workers tend to be more difficult to replace. As a result, skilled workers tend to demand more in the way of financial compensation because of their efforts. According to Greenspan, corporate managers are willing to bid on a payment package to get skilled workers because they identify the lack of skilled labor as one of the biggest problems today.

Education

Education is acceptable in a variety of ways, and is recognized in various ways. Below is an example of educational conventions.

  • Workplace training - (eg cashier, fashion model, farm worker, office clerk, salesperson, truck driver, waitress)
  • Apprenticeship - (eg carpenters, electricians, masons, mechanics, plumbers, technicians, welders)
  • Vocational certification - (Example: chef, beautician, dental assistant, paralegal)
  • Associate Degree - (Example: commercial artist, draftsman, licensed practice nurse)
  • Higher Apprenticeship - (Example: Chartered Engineer, Chartered Accountant, Management Consultant, Attorney)
  • Bachelor's Degree - (Example: accountant, teacher, registered nurse, software developer)
  • Professional Degree - (Example: architect, dentist, engineer, lawyer, doctor)
  • Graduate Degree - (Example: astronaut, mathematician, nurse practitioner, scientist, university professor)

In the American industry, there is a change in concentration of skilled workers from past economic fields e. g. steel, cars, textiles and chemicals for the development of newer industries (21st century) e. g. computers, telecommunications, and information technologies that are commonly represented by pluses rather than minuses for American living standards.

Migration

All countries are in a process of change and transition that allows the migration of skilled workers from lower places to higher opportunities in training and better working conditions. Although the materialistic rewards play a role in the migration of skilled workers, it is the lack of appropriate security, opportunities and rewards in the homeland that essentially make large movements possible, going from lower development places to prosperous societies.

Hunting education is a concern among developing countries, with the richest countries benefiting from the educational resources of most countries unable to lose the most productive career years from their highly skilled professionals. This is a disincentive factor in investment in education both in developing and developed countries, as foreign students and foreign workers limit the opportunities for citizens in recipient countries. Some developing countries see migration of trained professionals domestically abroad not as a sewer but as an advantage, "brain banks" to attract prices; for these professionals, upon their return with their accumulated skills, will contribute to the growth of the homeland; cultural factors support the return of these professionals for a short or long time. However, policies in the United States are directed at making non-immigrant visas eligible for status adjustment to permanent residence status.

European Union

The EU imposed a policy that paves the way for skilled workers from outside the Union to work and live in the EU under the Blue Card Scheme (EU). The main reasons for introducing this policy are the aging population in general and the increasing shortage of skilled workers in many member countries.

Intensity of migration of highly skilled workers

The demand for skilled Information Technology (IT) workers continues to increase. This has led to a reduction in the prevalent immigration restrictions in various countries. The migration of skilled workers from Asia to the United States, Canada, the UK and Australia is common, particularly among students and temporary migration of skilled IT workers. However, data show that the migration of skilled workers from Canada, Germany, Britain and France to the United States is only temporary and more like brain exchange than "brain drain".

The Brain Drain literature focuses primarily on the high cost of skilled migration to homeland or sending countries. This loss can be partially offset if migration is temporary. Developing countries invest in education. However, temporary migration can result in substantial remittances of capital flows to the homeland. This capital flow plus the additional knowledge gained will be more than just compensating the homeland for an investment that was originally made to educate skilled workers. The key to temporary migration is a change in the recipient country's trade and immigration policies and increasing demands of the sending country for the migration of skilled workers.
