Highway Services is the parent transportation company located in Akron, Ohio, which has several trucking companies, including Roadway Express, Roadway Global Air, Viking Freight, Freight Line Center, Spartan Express and Coles Express. They also have Road Package Systems, Roberts Express, and Roadway Logistics (ROLLS).
Roadway Express is separated as a debt-free company by itself. Since they have legal rights on behalf of Roadway, the remaining company in the parent company changed its name to Caliber Systems. Roadway Global Water is closed and what remains of it is sold to BAX Global. After the Roadway spinoff, management sought to put the four regional LTL companies together as national companies, which failed miserably. Coles and Spartans are closed, Central is resold to its original owners, and Viking is the only profitable company - advanced services in their region. After the 1997 UPS strike, Federal Express acquired Caliber Systems. In the fall of 1999, RPS was renamed to Fed Ex Ground, and Roberts Express became Fed Ex Custom Critical. Later, American Freightways approached Fed Ex about buying west coast freight Viking Freight, to complete full coverage of the United States. Instead Fed Ex bought American Freightways and combined it with Vikings to create Fed Ex Freight. Watkins Motor Lines was acquired, and run separately as Fed Ex National LTL, and eventually combined to Fed Ex Freight. Fed Ex Ground begins its home delivery division, Fed Ex Home Delivery.
Roadway Express was later acquired in 2003 by Yellow Freight, ran as a separate company for several years, then joined the company now known as YRC. There's never been an Ex Fed Roadway Express.
