This community is located adjacent to the Indian Ocean. Beagle Bay is the gateway to communities further north such as Djarindjin Community, Bobeiding Community and Ngardalargin. The main access road from Broome is not asphalted and becomes inaccessible during the 'rainy season', though it remains connected to other cities on the peninsula to the north with paved roads.

History

This community was founded by Trappist monks around the year 1890. Beagle Bay has a history of caring for the stolen children. In 1884, the first priest arrived to serve Catholics at Kimberley to try and change the Aboriginal people. Bishop Matthew Gibney founded the mission of Beagle Bay, developed on the land of the Nyul Nyul people; this became a site for Aboriginal people in 1890. The first Catholic school was founded by the Trappist Fathers at Beagle Bay in 1892. In 1895, the Trappist Sept-Fons monks in France expanded their missionary work from Beagle Bay to Broome. In 1901, the Pallottine Fathers of Germany took over the Beagle Bay Mission with two priests and four brothers. In 1907, St. John of God Sisters started a mission school at Beagle Bay and in 1918 the famous church was opened. It features a pearl shell altar which is now a tourist attraction. The Beagle Bay mission then became home to the Native people from across from Kimberley and beyond. Lawman and artist Butcher Joe Nangan lived and worked on missions from about 1920 to 1960s.

In his autobiography, Last Truck Out , Betty Lockyer recalled Beagle Bay's mission in the 1940s as "The Garden of Eden," where "Men have to do their work, each going to their own workplace. "Whether it's a bakery, a garden or checking a windmill. Women stay home to care for babies and small children... There is no such thing as an empty hand. "

Facilities

Power supply

Electricity is generated and supplied locally by Horizon Power and consists of Australia's standard 415/240 volt three-phase system 24 hours a day. There are frequent waves and electrical interruptions.

Water

There are two holes that pump into the ground tank. A pump transfer station then pumps water to a high level tank.

Funeral

This community has a functioning funeral. Aboriginal custom is not sensitive to mention the name of the deceased. The Shire of Broome Health Regulation stipulates that the body should be buried at least six feet below the ground; However, this can not be achieved at the Beagle Bay cemetery because the groundwater level is too high.

Sewerage

There is a sewer system in the community which consists of three pumping stations and treatment pools in the eastern suburbs of the community.

Recreation

This community has an Australian Rules soccer basketball and football field. Beagle Bay has a team at the Kimberley West Football Association called 'Bombers' Beagle Bay (Peninsular).

Taking a stroll in Bush, fishing and camping is a dominant activity for tourists visiting. Visitors are required to apply for permission before entering the Community.

Shopping

There is one store in town that is owned and operated by Outback Stores on behalf of the local Community. All goods are very expensive compared to the main centers. There is also a locally owned and operated bakery/takeaway. Mechanical repairs can be done in mechanical workshops.
