Plymouth was laid out in 1825. The village is named Plymouth Rock. Plymouth was founded in 1834.

Plymouth was once the headquarters of Plymouth Locomotive Works, an industrial railroad locomotive builder. The factory closed in 1999. Fate-Root-Heath Company
