Lykes Brothers, Inc. , is a Florida company founded by the Lykes Family in Tampa, Florida, in 1910. This family will become the largest landowner in Florida, the 9th largest landowner in the United States and the richest in Tampa Bay.
In the 1870s, Dr. Howell Tyson Lykes abandoned a medical career in Columbia, South Carolina, and took over a 500-acre (500 km) family farm in the Hernando County countryside north of Tampa. The Lykes family started their first school in this area at Spring Hill and the library in the county seat, Brooksville, also bears the name of Lykes. Spring Hill refers to the growing community around the Lykes family home called Spring Hill, which is different and separate from subsequent development by Deltona Corporation of the same name. Family funeral is located outside Brooksville.
In 1895, Dr. Lykes moved to Ballast Point in Tampa, Florida where he started sending cattle to Cuba. Gradually, his seven sons joined a family operation that joined in 1910 as the Lykes Brothers. The company will consist of interests in land, oranges, phosphate mining, timber (eucalyptus, pine), sugar cane, main shipping lanes (Lykes Brothers Steamship Company), livestock and meat processing, banking (First Florida Bank) and Lykes Insurance Company.
In the 1930s, Lykes Bros bought 265,000 acres (1,070 km 2 ) Lykes Ranch in West Texas, south of Alpine. In the 1950s, Lykes Bros. Steamships is the largest US shipping lane, with 54 cargo ships operating outside the Gulf port. The Lykes Bros. ship will be the first to sail to Shanghai port after the US has established ties with mainland China. A leader in orange concentrate, $ 15 million orange processing plant Lykes Pasco is the largest in Florida. The corporation took a hit when La Candelaria, 15,000-acre (61Ã, km 2 ) Lykes estate 250 miles (400 km) east of Havana, nationalized during the Cuban Revolution. Now is a cooperative farm.
