Honda Pilot Vs. Acura MDX - Which Model Should We Go After | CAR ...
src: carfromjapan.com

The Honda Pilot is an intermediate crossover SUV manufactured by Honda and introduced in 2002.

Primarily intended for the North American market, the Pilot is Honda's largest SUV and has three-row seats. The pilots currently produced in Lincoln, Alabama, and Pilot were produced at Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model year.

Pilots share platforms with Acura MDX, as well as Odyssey minivans and Accord sedans. Unibody pilot construction and independent suspension are designed to provide similar handling with the car and have an integrated perimeter frame rails to enable light towing and lightweight off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed a compact CR-V crossover, and Honda Passport (Radiso Isuzu rejuvenated) which is a pickup truck-based design. The pilot is the largest three-line SUV and only three lines, though Crosstour 2010 exceeds the length of the Pilot.

The pilot is sold in North America, while Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) is marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The pilot was given the Honda MR-V badge in the Middle East. Second-generation pilots are also marketed in Russia, Ukraine, and in the Dominican Republic. Pilots are also sold in the Philippines.

First generation (2003-2008)

Specifications

The 2003-2004 pilot featured the J35A4 motor, a 3.5L V6 aluminum alloy that produced 240 HP and 242 lb-ft of torque. The 2005 pilot received a new engine, J35A6, featuring throttle drive-by-wire and generated 255 HP and 250 lb-ft of torque. The refreshed 2006-2008 pilot came with J35Z1 (FWD) or J35A9 (4WD). Both engines are rated 244 HP and 240 lb-ft of torque. The updated FWD model features a Honda Cylinder Variable Management system, which can disable up to three cylinders under light weight to improve fuel economy. All Pilots of this generation have a 5-speed automatic transmission. The pilot has a front strut with coil-spring, multilink rear suspension for flat rear load floor. The front track is 66.3 in (1,684 mm) and 66.5 in (1,689 mm) at the rear. The pilot has a boat towing capacity of 4,500 lb (2,041 kg)/3,500 lb (1,588 kg) with an optional dealer towing package.

2003-2005 The pilot comes with a Honda Variable Torque Management 4WD system (VTM-4). Under normal driving conditions, most of the power is transferred to the front wheels while partially sent to the rear wheels. If the skid wheel is detected in the front, up to 50% of the power can be sent to the rear wheels. The system features a VTM-4 lock button on the dashboard that locks the rear differential and sends 25% power to each rear wheel. However, the VTM-4 key function only operates in first, second, and backward, and automatically releases above 18mph, then re-engages when speed drops below 18mph. The 2006 refresher model was the first time a Pilot was offered at FWD.

Design

Pilot design was done by Honda Ricky Hsu throughout 1999, when styling was approved. The pilot can accommodate up to eight passengers in three rows configured as a stadium seat. The third row can hold three, but limited leg room makes it suitable only for small children or adults on short-haul trips. Similar to the Honda Odyssey, the rear seats can be folded into a flat surface for larger cargo. Options include powered moonroof, DVD entertainment system, and navigation system.

Other features include ABS ABS-four ABS ABS brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel independent suspension, and 282 ° outer viewing.

2006 Facelift

Honda revised the Pilot for the 2006 model year in October 2005. Changes to the exterior include a new fascia with different grille inserts and halogen projector lamps, and taillights with clear lenses. The EX trim level accepts the redesigned wheel, and the original EX wheel is now found in the LX trim. On the inside, side airbags are provided at C pillars, updated gauge clusters and center consoles featuring chrome trim and redesigned storage compartments and cup holders.

Second Second generation (2009-2015)

The second generation larger pilot was unveiled as a prototype in January 2008 at the North American International Auto Show. Assembled at Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln, Alabama, it is offered in five trims; LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and SE (2015 only). It receives a new 3.5-liter V6 VTEC engine that produces 250Ã, hp (186Ã, kW; 253 PS) SAE net at 5700 rpm and 253 lbb of torque? Ft (343Ã, N? M) at 4800 rpm. EPA fuel economy rated at 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway with front-wheel-drive and 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway for all-wheel-drive.

Both drivetrains are equipped with five-speed automatics. The second-generation wheelbase is 109.2 inches long, 190.9 inches long, 78.5 inches wide, 71.0 inches tall, and 153.7 cu-ft interior space. Redesigned headlamps lose previous generation halogen projectors and return to standard halogen reflectors. Features include two new position memory settings for the driver's seat, new power tailgate, and gear shifting are moved from the steering column to the center console between the front seats. Trim Touring includes a 120-volt power outlet and a satellite-related Honda navigation system.

facelift 2012

The 2012 model introduces a redesigned front fascia, new wheels, and updates to the interior and changes to the bumper.

2013 changed

The 2013 model includes a standard rear view backup camera, i-MID central dashboard 8-inch LCD screen, USB connector, hands-free Bluetooth call and wireless audio streaming, and tri-zone climate control.

Security

The pilot uses Honda Advanced Compatibility Engineering front bracket. For the 2013 model year, the rear view backup camera is standard. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found the Pilot death rate of drivers of 2 deaths per million a year listed among the ten lowest released in their report.
