Histori
Boca was named by Judge Edwin Bryant Crocker of Central Pacific Railroad in 1868 for its location at the mouth of the Little Truckee River. In Spain, Ice and milling companies
The first business to be established in this area was the Boca Mill and Ice Company in 1868. In 1881 many ice companies merged, creating the Union Ice Company, which merged in 1891. The dam was finally built creating a 180-hectare reservoir used by the Union Ice Company to store logs in the summer and as a place to harvest ice during the winter. Once cut, ice is transported downstream to one of the company's six ice houses. The amount of ice stored in their ice house is said to be enough to supply the entire state of California for 12 years. Reaching its peak in 1872, Boca produced so much wood and ice for the rest of the country that has its own railroad to and from the factory. The discovery of man-made ice and cooling eventually replaced the need to cut natural ice and in the mid-1920s the ice company ended its operations in Boca. With the ice company going, the factory and brewery are the only big business left in Boca. The brewery burned down in 1893 and was never rebuilt, leaving only a grinding operation, which ended at the same time due to a reduced supply of trees. Finally, in 1904, the hotel burned down and what remained of the city was later destroyed to make way for the Boca reservoir. Only a few cement and cemetery foundations remain from the city of Boca.
Boca Brewing Company
The Boca Brewing Company, founded in 1875, produced the first beer in California. Lagers require cooling and very cold temperatures during the fermentation process which is why most Californian manufacturers choose to produce porters and beer. The Boca location is the perfect environment for lager brewing because of its natural springs, unlimited supply of ice for cooling, winter, and access to the Central Pacific Railroad. Famous for using natural springs in its beer, the Boca Brewing Company product was celebrated at the World Exposition in Paris in 1883. The company produces 25 to 30 thousand barrels of beer per year. This brewery employs as many as 80 people, who contribute to a population of nearly 300 for Boca. The brewery burned on the ground in 1893 and was never rebuilt.
Steam Anchors
In February 2012, Anchor Brewing in San Francisco introduced the Zymaster No. 1 Lager to honor Boca Brewing Company. An attempt to recreate Boca's native Boca beer, a single-hop beer using two barley and mountain water rows and following the traditional beer recipes that produce maltier, hoppier drinks and more powerful than most lagers sold.
