TFI International Inc. is a Canadian transportation and logistics company based in Montreal, Quebec. It operates in Canada through 4 business segments, and in the United States. It has the largest LTL business in Canada, the largest truck fleet and ranked 14th in terms of revenue in 2005 among North American LTL operators (but the newer listings like [1] suggest it may be closer to the top 5 (first qtr revenue 2010 TFI International $ 466.1 million versus 5 US company rank $ 359.9 million) The truck fleet consists of 6700 units of power and 12,000 trailers Two thirds of the business comes from operations in Eastern Canada while the rest are from Western Canada.
The main growth source of the company is a full takeover (not holding shares in other companies) from smaller trucking companies (35 since 1992) which later became subsidiaries, although organic growth recently contributed to a 53% increase in freight in the first half of the year 2010. In December 2010 entered the US market by acquiring Dallas-based Dynamex with a takeover bid of $ 248 million. In the 12 months to 31 October 2010, Dynamex earned $ 418 million in revenue (about a quarter of TFI International). Although TFI International trimmed its truck fleet by 100 units of power in 2010, revenues did not fall, resulting from improved equipment efficiency. Former Quebec prime minister Lucien Bouchard is a member of the board of directors, representing Davies Ward Phillips & amp; Vineberg.
Part of the company's strategy is to give subsidiaries (mostly to one-time independent companies) to a certain degree of autonomy. It enables each subsidiary to continue serving different regional markets, giving the parent company access to more markets. TFI International then uses its influence and cash flow to help increase the capacity of each subsidiary (as it did in 2010 when its purchase from the 52-door doorstock in Calgary added three times the capacity of the Overland TST and expanded its shipping network). For 2010, overall revenues increased slightly (8.4%) but LTL revenues fell by 5.9% (due to lower prices and stronger Canadian dollars); the acquisition of the ATS Retail Solutions company together with an agreement signed by Canpar with the Ontario government, improved the yield for the package-courier business.
In 2011 adjusted earnings of TFI International (excluding derivatives and exchange rates) were $ 102.5 million (up 43%) of revenues of $ 2,690.53 million (up 34%, 4q revenue rose 46%, profit rose 63%). The recently acquired Dynamex and Loomis Express contributed revenues of $ 202 million to TFI International in 2011. They accounted for nearly all changes in fourth quarter sales and $ 608 million from a $ 688 million increase over the year.
