Histori
Pilot Corporation was founded by James Haslam Jr. in 1958 at Gate City, Virginia when he bought an existing gas station. In 1965, the Pilot had 12 stations, and sold 5 million gallons of fuel each year. The pilot built its first self-service store in 1976, and converted all of its locations into stores.
In 1981, Pilot built its first travel center, and has been focusing on its business aspect ever since. 1988 saw Pilot begin concentration to expand its travel center network in the national presence. Also in 1988, Pilot opened its first travel center with a fast food restaurant in it. On September 1, 2001, the Pilot and Marathon Petroleum Company established Pilot Travel Centers, LLC. On July 1, 2010, the travel center chain of Pilots and Flying J merged to form Flying J Pilots. Both brands retained their separate identities in the combined company.

Sport sponsors
NASCAR
In 1998, the pilot was sponsored by Gary Bradberry and Triad Motorsports at NASCAR. This short-lived effort, however, ended in 1999.
The pilot returned to NASCAR in 2011 with the help of Scott Wombold when he became the main sponsor of Rusty Wallace Racing driver Michael Annett at the NASCAR Nationwide Series. When the deal came after the merger of Flying J, the Pilot and Flying J were the main sponsor of the car.
In 2012, when Annett moved to the National team of Richard Petty Motorsports, the Flying J Pilot followed him to his new team.
In 2014, Annett moved to the Sprint Cup Series, driving a No. Chevrolet. 7 for Tommy Baldwin Racing, and again the Flying J Pilot followed him, re-entering the Cup Series for the first time since 1998. Sponsors follow Annett to No. 46 Chevrolet for the HScott Motorsports on the Sprint Cup Series in 2016 and Chevrolet No. 5 for JR Motorsports at Xfinity Series in 2017.
Pittsburgh Steelers
In 2008, Pilot James President Jimmy Haslam III, James's founding son Jim (Jim) Haslam II, bought a 16% stake in Pittsburgh Steelers as part of a restructuring of team ownership because some of Rooney's family heirs maintained his stakes in corporate gambling such as horses and horses racing stables, breaking NFL rules. It was not known at the time whether it would lead to a sponsorship deal between the two at the Pilot Center location in the Pittsburgh area, or perhaps a sponsorship deal with the NFL on a national basis. The Rooney family maintains control of the franchise itself.
Cleveland Browns
In August 2012, Pilot President Jimmy Haslam purchased a controlling stake in Cleveland Browns from Randy Lerner for more than $ 1 billion, pending approval from other NFL owners. Under NFL rules, he must sell his share in Steelers before buying Browns. Haslam has made plans with the Rooney family to sell his Steelers interest, and is expected to sell the shares at the time of purchase of Browns completed in October 2012. Haslam sold the naming rights for FirstEnergy to become FirstEnergy Stadium.
