History

In 1905, William Pigott, Sr founded Seattle Car Mfg. Co. to produce rail and logging equipment at its plant in West Seattle. The company later merged with Twohy Brothers of Portland to Pacific Car and Foundry Company, a name that was maintained for the next 55 years. In 1924, William Pigott sold control of the company to American Car and Foundry Company.

Paul Pigott, founding son, acquired the company's primary interest from American Car in 1934. Under his leadership, the company expanded its products and introduced the Carco power crane to use on crawler tractors in the logging industry. This product line then became the basis for the PACCAR Winch Division located in Oklahoma, which now includes Braden, Carco, and Gearmatic.

The company entered the heavy duty truck market in 1945 with the first major acquisition, Kenworth Motor Truck Company of Seattle. Pacific Car and Foundry greatly expanded the capabilities of the heavy-duty truck with the purchase of Peterbilt Motors Company in 1958. That same year, the acquisition of Dart Truck Company allowed entry into the completely new mining vehicle market.

Structural Division Steel company fabricated steel for the construction of the Space Needle for the Seattle World Exposition in 1962. Later, it played a major role in the construction of the third power plant Grand Coulee Dam as well as the World Trade Center of New York City.

In 1960, PACCAR became an international truck manufacturer. Kenworth moved to Mexico with 49 percent participation in affiliate, Kenworth Mexicana S.A. de C.V., and in 1966 PACCAR entered the Australian truck market with the establishment of the Kenworth Truck assembly plant near Melbourne.

Also in 1960, Carco Acceptance Corporation, currently PACCAR Financial Corp., was launched to facilitate domestic truck sales.

In 1967 the Dynacraft division was formed to provide belts, hoses, adapters, and other accessories for the Kenworth and Peterbilt truck plants. In 1969, 28 hectares of land was purchased on the outskirts of Bayswater town - 30 km east of Melbourne to Kenworth Australia. Construction plans were made and in 1970, 56,000 square foot factory and office complexes were completed to produce trucks initially on a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) basis. During the 35 years of Kenworth Australia's history in Australia, it has become a major manufacturing force in the markets of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

Believing "Pacific Car and Foundry Company" no longer accurately reflect the company's products and activities, the directors and shareholders chose to adopt PACCAR Inc as its new name in 1972.

In 1973, two major divisions of PACCAR were established. PACCAR International Inc., with headquarters in Bellevue, Washington, was formed to consolidate overseas company sales and service products, and the PACCAR Parts Division was established in Renton to supply aftermarket parts sales.

PACCAR Leasing Corporation was formed in 1980 to offer full service leasing and leasing programs through the PACCAR dealers network. A year later, PACCAR became a European truck manufacturer with the acquisition of Foden Trucks in Sandbach, England.

The new PACCAR Technical Center opened in July 1982. Located about 65 miles north of Seattle, the multimillion dollar center underscores the company's commitment to technical excellence, quality and value in its products.

In 1986, PACCAR signed a merger agreement with Trico Industries, Inc., manufacturing pumps and accessories for oilfields. In December 1997 Trico was sold to EVI of Houston.

In 1987, PACCAR acquired Al's Auto Supply from Washington, a retailer and wholesale distributor of auto parts and accessories. In 1988, PACCAR expanded its subsidiary PACCAR Automotive, Inc. when purchasing Grand Auto, Inc., a retailer of auto parts and accessories in California. In October 1999, PACCAR Automotive was sold to CSK Auto, Inc.

PACCAR solidified its position in the Mexican heavy-duty truck market by purchasing the remaining parts of Operation Mexico, VILPAC, S.A. in 1995.

Acquisition of DAF Trucks N.V. in 1996 and Leyland Trucks in 1998 founded PACCAR as one of the largest truck manufacturers in the world. DAF Trucks is a Dutch based trucking company with production facilities in Eindhoven, Netherlands and Westerlo, Belgium. Leyland manufactures DAF trucks at its plant in Lancashire, England.

For leadership in aerodynamic development, light commercial vehicles that have led to reduced fuel consumption and increased efficiency, PACCAR Inc. was awarded the National Medal of Technology at the White House in 2006.

In 2010, PACCAR launched its PACCAR MX machine line for North America. While the MX engine is new to the North American market, DAF has been building machinery in Europe since 1957. PACCAR is investing $ 400 million at its PACCAR Engine plant and technology center in Columbus, Mississippi, to assemble its own machines.

In 2013, PACCAR expanded its global operations with the opening of a new DAF plant in Ponta Grossa, Brazil. The company invested $ 320 million in a 300,000 sq ft assembly facility on 569 hectares. The factory assembles DAF XF and CF vehicles for the South American market.

PACCAR announced the Silicon Valley Innovation Center in Sunnyvale, California in 2017. The center coordinates the development of next generation products and identifies emerging technologies that will benefit future vehicle performance.

PACCAR makes light, medium, and heavy trucks under the nameplate of Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF. PACCAR also designs and manufactures diesel engines, provides financial services and information technology, and distributes truck parts related to its core business.
