National Motor Freight Traffic Association ( NMFTA ) is a nonprofit membership organization headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. Its members are motor operators operating in interstate, intrastate and foreign trade. The association was founded in 1956.
The mission of NMFTA is to "promote, promote and improve the welfare and interests of the motor vehicle carrier and motor vehicle operators operating in trade, domestically and internationally."
NMFTA publishes National Motor Freight Classificationî (NMFCÃ,î), a standard that classifies cargo. NMFTA also produces ClassITÃ,î, the online version of NMFC. The Commodity Classification Standards Board (CCSB) develops and maintains NMFCs.
The NMFTA establishes and publishes Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC), a two to four letter code used to identify road transport companies. NMFTA also establishes and issues the Standard Point Location Code (SPLC), a numerical code to identify locations in North America originating and receiving cargo.
