The mater design is based on the 1956-57 Chevrolet crane truck that used to lift equipment from the mine shaft in Cherokee County, Kansas. The town of Galena Route 66 is named for galena of tin sulphite ore, where a series of small mining towns around Baxter Springs owe the next bum and boom. The original truck is currently based at the former Kan-O-Tex Service Station in Galena; the station was restored as a Route 66 restaurant and souvenir shop by Four Woman on Route one year after the 2006 film release.
Mater's driving skills include claims to be "the world's best retirement driver," a capability taken from none other than Dean Walker, president of the Kansas Historic Route 66 Association known in Riverton as "Crazy Legs Walker, Crazy Foot Daddy on Route 66" for his ability turning her legs back and walking backwards.
Mater takes his nickname from construction superintendent and NASCAR fan die-hard Douglas "Mater" Keever, who provides the voice of one of the RVs who watch great races ("Well dip me in axle grease and call me slick!"). RV's point of view in the race is modeled on "Redneck Hill" at Charlotte Motor Speedway favored by hardcore fans in tent and camping pop-ups.
"My name is... Yes, like tuh-mater, but without tuh."
Mater's character speaks with a loud South Redneck accent with a slight twist of the hill and often uses the wrong syntax. The real-life person who is the inspiration for Mater's voice is Harley Russell of Erick, Oklahoma on Route 66. Harley's natural voice has the same voice and behavior as Mater does. Mater's last personality is based on his voice actor Larry the Cable Guy, and he uses many of Larry's slogans, including "Git-R-Done" during the last race sequence and "I do not care who you are; it's really funny there" during the tipping scene of the tractor. Larry the Cable Guy spends time with Harley Russell to learn the voice for that character. A Cars "Rev'd Up" DVD was released as a 2006 bonus in Target shop describing Mater as inspired by the 1957 Dodge truck.

Characterization
The color of the mater was initially pale blue as shown in flashbacks when he was a child; However, over the years he was rusted into a light patchy brown/orange color with some still visible blue color. He lost his hood and headlights. In a short time Mater and the Ghostlight , the headlights also fell. During the first Cars movie credits, Mater rode his hood from a cliff on the Tailfin Pass, and his hood showed more of the original color than the rest of the Mater. But then Mater sneezes, causing the hood to fall back onto the cliff. The number plate is A113. Mater is also capable of racing, as well as being the best retreat driver of the world (self-proclaimed) best. He attributes his skills to his rearview mirror and his own philosophy: "No need to know where I'm going, just to know where I am." He taught Lightning this skill and was proud when he used it in the Piston Cup race, proudly telling the surprise pit crew Chick "I taught him that!" This is further recorded at Cars 2 , when Mater backed away from McQueen (so he could get the bomb tied up in air filters away from McQueen's reach), he was able to avoid himself from crashing, the actions that made Darrell Cartrip said, "He must be the best driver in the world".
In Cars 2 , Mater displays extensive encyclopedic knowledge such as knowledge of automotive parts and machinery. He answered correctly the code question about Volkswagen Karmann Ghia which was asked by British intelligence agent, Holley Shiftwell, who directed him to think he was the American agent he was supposed to meet. Later, when Shiftwell and his partner, Finn McMissile, featured Mater, a photograph of a mystery car engine, he identified it on sight and showed the parts used to keep it running. His incredible knowledge helped McMissile and Shiftwell capture Sir Miles Axlerod, the main villain of the film. Mater was given honorary knight by the Queen.
Appearance
Car
Mater runs "Tow Mater Towing and Salvage" and is the first to befriend and support Lightning along his adventures at Radiator Springs. During the movie, Mater shows Lightning how to do "Tractor-Tippin" and how to drive backward without crashing, a technique that Lightning uses to fight dirty racing Chick Hicks in the Piston Cup tiebreak. In the end, McQueen asked Tex to give Mater a chance to fly by Dinoco's helicopter as he always wanted, telling Sally that Mater was his best friend.
Car 2
Mater's friendship with Lightning McQueen has grown instead of diminishing, with the best friend's handshake to prove it. The mater value of each dent was made during his adventures with Lightning as symbolic of their friendship. In an effort to defend his friend against rivals rival Francesco Bernoulli, Mater gets Lightning for the race at the World Grand Prix. Lightning in turn invited Mater to join him, and they set off from Radiator Springs to Tokyo for the first race. Mater was soon mistaken for an American secret agent and trapped in a spy world. Agent Holley Shiftwell plays an interest in Mater's love/girlfriend; Mater is fascinated by her beauty and falls in love with her soon. During the first race, Mater inadvertently caused miscommunication to McQueen's disadvantage; resulting in McQueen hitting Mater and telling him that he does not want his help anymore. In fact, McQueen points out that Mater's antics are the reason why McQueen usually does not take her to her race. Feeling sad and very guilty, Mater decided to return home, only to continue her 'mission' with British agents. Mater finally broke the mystery of the World Grand Prix during the third and final race in London, and was given an honorific knighthood for his courage. At the end of the film, he decides to compete in an unofficial Radiator Springs Grand Prix with McQueen after getting a pair of rockets.
Car 3
Mater takes on a more supportive role in Cars 3 . Mater remains McQueen's best friend and supporter, never missing any race to proudly show much support, to the extent of wearing wearable merchandise. He is also there with Sally to cheer McQueen after he crashes, and is one of the remaining Radiator Springs who watched McQueen finally make the decision to keep pace. Then, in the middle of the movie, the dreary McQueen called Mater by FaceTime's phone, and they both had a fun and heartfelt conversation. McQueen asked Mater to help after seeing that Jackson Storm, the car, has a new speed record, has the potential to beat Lightning McQueen. In response, Mater unconsciously pointed out that McQueen tracked down and got advice from Doc Hudson's mentor, Smokey. He was seen aware of Sterling's selfish plan under his words and bought McQueen some time by turning his attention from keeping McQueen to Cruz Ramirez's replacement for the race. He was also seen with everyone at Radiator Springs when Lightning showed his new look. In the post-credit scene, Mater was singing a funny song and was cleaning in his parking lot, and when the phone rang, he was shocked and jumped in fear and accidentally dropped the receiver antenna along with the tire falling from the roof of his hut, and FaceTime on the phone died, worried him.
Mens and the Ghostlight
This short film follows Mater's daily activities after things return to normal at Radiator Springs. Mater likes to play frightening jokes to other characters until the blue light starts to haunt him. His last joke was the most successful: Lightning McQueen saw the hook hook hung from behind the pile of tins and, assuming that Mater was hiding behind him, approached to thwart the joke. Mater then jumps off the roof of Flo's cafe, shouting behind McQueen, who is then shocked and knocks a pile of cans, revealing that the hook was actually from Mater's business sign, so the bait. Everyone starts laughing at McQueen for falling for this clever trick, and Mater teases, "Whoa, Buddy, you look like you see... Ghost Rays! "
The sheriff rebuked him for "mocking the Ghost Lamp", the urban legend character among the cars. The Ghostlight is described as a "translucent light blue light ball" that haunts Radiator Springs, and does not hate anything but metal clatter sounds - sounds often made by Mater's rickety shell. The sheriff keeps telling the story of a young couple lost in the area, with only two "license plates" from outside the state. He then concluded with great cheer, "Well, g'night." Radiator Springs's population then went off in seconds, leaving Mater very nervous on his own.
When he reaches the garage, he first fears by "lightning insects" (a small flying Volkswagen Beetle with bright headlights). As she relaxed, a bright blue light suddenly appeared behind her and she panicked, driving around in a frenzy, first walking along the main road, then passing the tractor, past Frank, then around Willy's Butte, key-strafe after that, until he's exhausted. However, Ghostlight is revealed to be a blazing blue lantern for Mater's towing cable hanged by McQueen and Guido.
The short end with Mater finally collapsed on the road before finally realizing that it was just a blue lantern. That's when the rest of the people around him and laugh at him, revealing a joke in return for the joke he did to them (with his best friend, Lightning, laughing out loud and throwing "Gotcha!"). The credits rolled and after they had a cover shot in which the terrified Mater found out he had a large construction vehicle behind him, snarling and carrying the number plate "Banshee." Mater does not realize who it is and warns him from Banshee Screaming before driving, bargaining confused Banshee a good night.
Car Toons: Mater's Tall Tales
Mater is the main character in his short animated series, Cars Toon: Mater's Tall Tales with Larry the Cable Guy repeating his role. Each story begins with Mater telling her unreasonable past story. In the story, Mater finds herself in an inescapable situation. When McQueen questioned Mater whether the events in the story really happened, Mater replied, "Do not you remember? You're there too!", And went on to say the story of McQueen's sudden participation. The short series ends with Mater leaving the scene, often followed by a character or reference to the story being told, posing the possibility that the story might be real.
