Pilot Flying J
Haslam began his career at Pilot Corporation in 1976. In 1980, Haslam was named vice president of sales, development and operations. At the time, the Pilot operated 100 department stores with annual fuel sales of around 125 million gallons. The pilot opened its first travel center in 1981, and in 1996 - the same year Haslam was named president and chief executive officer - the company operated 96 travel centers and 50 department stores and total gallon sales had reached 1.2 billion. Pilot Corporation reached another milestone in 2001 when it joined Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC to form Pilot Travel Centers LLC.
In 2008, the Pilot Corporation announced that CVC Capital Partners has acquired 49.8% ownership in Pilot Travel Centers LLC, facilitating sales by Marathon Petroleum Company (formerly Marathon Ashland Petroleum) of concern at Pilot Travel Centers. Pilot Corporation retains 50% ownership of Pilot Travel Centers LLC. By 2015, Haslam's family acquired all CVC Capital Partners shares in the company. Pilot department store operations are fully owned by Pilot Corporation. In 2010, Pilot Travel Centers LLC merged with Flying J Inc. In 2012, Pilot Flying J acquired Western Petroleum and majority ownership of Maxum Petroleum and in 2012 established Maxum Enterprises LLC, d/b/a Pilot Logistics Services. In 2014, Pilot Logistics Services merged with Thomas Petroleum to form Pilot Thomas Logistics. Pilot Flying J Pilot Thomas Logistics subsidiary is one of the fastest growing logistics companies in North America.
Pilot Flying J is one of the 10 largest private companies in the United States and employs over 24,000 employees. The Flying J. Pilot Network gives customers access to over 70,000 parking spaces for trucks, 4,800 bathrooms, and 4,300 diesel lines featuring DEF at the pump.
In April 2013, the FBI executed a search warrant and a declaration detailing a five-year fraud scheme by the Flying J Pilot chain. The company paid compensation to customers and agreed to pay a $ 92 million fine under the Penal Code.
Community engagement
Haslam's civilian involvement included service on the board of directors of Anderson Media Corporation. He has also served on the boards of Way Way Greater Knoxville, Lakeshore Park in Knoxville and the National Association of Truck Stop Operators (NATSO). In addition, Haslam served as honorary chairman of Boys & amp; Girls Clubs of Cleveland, the campaign committee and as a campaign seat for Knox Area Rescue Ministries and United Way of Greater Knoxville.
In 2006, he served as campaign chairman throughout the state of Tennessee for US Senator Bob Corker and in 2012, he served as Chief of State Finance for Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, his brother.
Haslam was inducted into the Junior Achievement of the East Tennessee Business Hall of Fame in 2007, and in 2010, he was named the recipient of Ernst & amp; Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for the Southeast region. In 2013, the University of Tennessee recognized Haslam with a respectable Alumnus Award. He is one of the founders of the Belam Scholars Program for major honors students at the University of Tennessee.
Proprietary NFL team
Haslam purchased a minority stake in Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008. In 2012, he reached an agreement with Browns owner Randy Lerner to buy a $ 1 billion franchise. The Browns were rewarded $ 977 million in 2011 by the Forbes magazine 20 in the NFL. The NFL rules prohibit ownership on some teams and so Haslam sold his interest in Steelers. The Haslams' purchase of the Browns was unanimously approved by 32 teams in the NFL on October 12; the sale itself was closed thirteen days later.
Since officially taking over seven Browns games into the 2012 season, Haslam has a 20-76 record as team owner, including a 0-16 record in 2017.
