Education
Gerald Hosier received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University and earned his Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University College of Law. He is also registered to practice in the US Patent and Trademark Office as a registered patent attorney.
Careers and clients
He has served as the primary lawyer for Jerome H. Lemelson, the inventor named on 741 US patents, and the inventor of a self-proclaimed bar code scanning. Although Lemelson died on October 1, 1997, Hosier continues to sue for Lemelson's patents on behalf of Lemelson's heirs, including Lemelson Medical, the Educational and Research Foundation (Lemelson Foundation). American lawyer reported his 2003 income of $ 150 million. Lemelson was a prominent philanthropist; Hosier was once known as a spendthrift and extravagant, but Hosier has established the Hosier family foundation that makes many charitable contributions, such as being the main sponsor of the Aspen Institute.
In 2005, the key Lemelson patent on bar code scanning was declared invalid for leachate prosecution, unduly delaying the patent application process so that it issued a patent long after the discovery was considered a public domain. This loss has reduced Hosier's income and influence. Hosier is on the Board of Trustees for the Aspen Institute.
Hosier has been characterized as a patent troll, in fact "Babe Ruth of patent trolls," a statement attributed to Judge Kimberly Moore of the US Court of Appeals for Federal Circuitry. Patent attorney Raymond P. Niro praised his former partner, Hosier, by being a pioneer of patent trolls, refusing honor for himself, citing a 2001 blogging story that featured a photo of Hosier with a troll image.
Hosier won a $ 48 million award from Citigroup in 2011 in case of charging "Citigroup misleads their richest clients and then tries to blame them for relying on what they are told." Hosier said Citigroup's Citigroup's Barney Smith unit is "out there producing products with no utility at all except for generating fees."
