Chrysler Pentastar engine

The Chrysler Pentastar machine family is a series of aluminum (die-cast cylinder block) overhead double cam 24-valve gasoline engine V6 introduced for model-year 2011 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles. FCA has invested heavily in crops ($ 2 billion, excluding engineering itself). The machine was originally called "Phoenix", but its name was changed before the official launch due to trademark conflict; the Pentastar name comes from the former Chrysler Corporation trademark, dating from 1963. Pentastar was introduced at the New York Car Show 2009. The engine design also allows the use of octane fuel E85 or 87, supports cylinder deactivation, and dual variable valve timing features. Pentastar engines do not currently use EGR but not only support the use of technology but are expected to add it in short-term engine updates known as "Pentastar 2016". Both Direct Injection and forced air induction options are engineered into the Pentastar engine design, however, such as cylinder deactivation, it has not been implemented from the factory and remains "on the shelf" at present.

Pentastar upgrade

For 2016, FCA released the latest version of the 3.6 L engine for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. This machine now features two-stage variable valve lift (VVL), cooled EGR, new intake manifold, new fuel injector, and new ignition coil. It also features upgrades to variable valve timing (VVT) systems, an increased compression ratio (11.3: 1), lower internal friction and lower weights. These improvements help improve power and efficiency. The new version, however, has lost its flex-fuel capability.

Production

Pentastar machines are made in three different factories: Mack Avenue Machine Complex, Trenton Machine Factory, and South Saltillo Machine Factory.

Insiders initially reported that the engine would come in four basic sizes (3.0L, 3.3L, 3.6L, and 4.0L), each offered in various states. The 4.0L has dropped from the list and added 3.2L, while Fiat's investor website, as of December 2011, assigns 3.0L with MultiAir technology from Fiat. The 3.6L engine itself has different horsepower ratings in different vehicles, and has higher horsepower (305Ã, hp) and torque (268Ã, Â £ lb) as used in the Dodge Challenger

Twin and single turbocharged variants are planned for 2015. These engines are projected to produce about 420 and 370 horsepower respectively. Direct injection is also planned.

Due to the new ownership structure, Fiat has gained the right to use this machine, and is currently adopting them in a larger model of the Lancia and Fiat brands.
