Geography
The Afon Carno rose near the watershed with Afon Dyfi; and ran 9 miles southeast to the Severn River, 2 miles north of Llandinam. The name of this village is supposedly derived from the Welsh word for cairn (carnedd), as there are many ancient monuments in the hills surrounding the village. The A470 road between Llanbrynmair and Caersws passes through the village. This part of the route follows the Afon Carno course through the hill country.

History
A Roman fort named Gaia Noddfa is located next to the church yard on the edge of Afon Carno. This site covers a rectangular area 450 feet (140 m) with 270 feet (82 m). A large mound occupies part of the fort; the nearby found pottery shows medieval usage but the suggestion that it is a Norman castle like motte has been rejected.
In 952, Iago and Ieuaf, two exiled Idol Foel sons, King Gwynedd, invaded Dyfed. But they were defeated in a decisive battle near Carno by the sons of Hywel Dda, King of Deheubarth. The victory secured North Wales sovereignty. Another decisive battle occurred here in 1081 where "all the leading figures of that period took part, and who left a permanent impression on the history of Gwynedd and Deheubarth".

The original Carno station was opened by Newtown and Machynlleth Railway in 1863. It was closed, along with a number of stations on the Cambrian Line, as part of Beeching's cuts in the 1960s. In 2002 the campaign began to reopen the station near the village. In 2009, the Welsh Assembly agreed to review the proposal as part of the Cambrian Rail Study.
In 2014, the Welsh Assembly affirmed that Arriva Trains Wales and Network Rail widely agreed with an independent report recommending the reopening of stations in Carno. However, the new station needs to be built as the original Victorian building (which was incorporated into Laura Ashley's previous factory) is privately owned.
