Route description
Route 58 between Santa Margarita and Buttonwillow is a mountainous road that meanders through densely populated areas. From its western tip on US 101 near Santa Margarita, Route 58 heads east along the former US 101 (El Camino Real) for a mile, where Route 58 separates from El Camino Real. Route 58 then heads east and up a winding mountain road, through crowded areas and intersections with State Route 229. Alternatives such as State Route 46 to the north or Route Country 166 to the south are recommended, as many of these passages Route 58 banned for truck traffic. However, this SR 58 passes through the Carrizo Plain, known for its scenic beauty and geological features, including the San Andreas Fault. Route 58 then takes another winding road before joining State Route 33 in the small town of McKittrick. Route 33 then split at the northern end of McKittrick before Route 58 then entered another, but short, winding road. Route 58 then continue northeast for several miles before turning east-west and reaching Buttonwillow. A few miles later, Route 58 has an intersection with Interstate 5. About 7 miles (11 km) east of Interstate 5, Route 58 briefly joins State Route 43 before proceeding east and finally reaches the city limits of Bakersfield.
Route 58 joins State Route 99 about 1 mile (1.6 km) through Bakersfield before splitting as a freeway and heading east. Route 58 briefly enters a highway status with two in-class crossing in the Caliente area before continuing the free road status in eastern Caliente. Route 58 then reaches Tehakhapi town limits and crosses the Tehachapi Pass before descending from the Tehachapi Mountains to the Antelope Valley in the city of Mojave. Shortly after the intersection with State Route 14, Route 58 returned to the highway east of Mojave before continuing the highway status through North Edwards, Edwards Air Force Base, and Boron. East Boron, Route 58 returns to one lane in each direction before an in-class signal intersection with US Route 395. Around 10 miles (16 km) east of Route 395, Route 58 continues the highway status with two lanes in each direction until just before reaching the easternmost terminal on Interstate 15 near Barstow.
Route 58 is a highway from the southern intersection with Route 99 in Bakersfield (West Bakersfield Interchange) to several miles east of Mojave (bypass highway from Mojave completed in 2004), except for two separate two-mile (3.2 km) grade intersections in the Caliente area. There is a grade level intersection to the east of Mojave and west of the northern gate north of Edwards AFB where California City Blvd. cut it off. Another freeway segment is a bypass of Boron and Barstow. Except for the Boron freeway, SR 58 is a four lane line (two lanes per direction) east of Boron to the Barstow bypass segment with the exception of Route 58 sections between Boron and about 5 miles (8.0 km). km) east of Kramer Junction, which is currently a two-lane highway and yet is a highway.
Route 58 takes the southern route through Sierra Nevada and allows motorists to travel between Northern California and head east, like Las Vegas and Interstate 40 without having to face extreme traffic jams in greater Los Angeles. Route 58 and Interstate 80 are the only highways to cross the Sierra Nevada. The route also offers an alternative to the often dangerous Donner Pass for drivers traveling from the San Francisco Bay Area to the eastern points; before the construction of Interstate 80, roads (such as US Route 466) are widely used for this purpose.
SR 58 is part of the California Freeway and Expressway System, and eastern I-5 is part of the National Highway System, a highway network considered critical to the economy, defense and mobility of the country by the Federal Highway Administration. SR 58 qualifies for the State Scenic Highway System, but is not officially designated as a beautiful highway by the California Department of Transportation. SR 58 has several names along its length, including the Blue Star Memorial Highway (for its entire length); Toll Road Warning of Korean Kern County War Veterans, for part of Route 184 to Kern County/San Bernardino County; and Rosa Parks Highway, for the part between Route 99 and Route 184. The Korean War Veteran names honor about 8,120 veterans from Kern County, while the section named Rosa Parks honors civil rights activists. Part of 58 from Barstow to Bakersfield is sometimes referred to as Barstow-Bakersfield Highway.

History
Route 58 did not exist as a route marks California until 1964 although before 1964 it was part of the California legislative route 58. Another part of the 58 legislative route was the segment of Interstate 40 California; before 1964 it was a 66 US segment.
Prior to 1964, the SR 58 segment between Bakersfield and Barstow was signed by US Route 466. Also at that time, the Route 58 segment between State Route 33 at McKittrick and Route 99 in Bakersfield was signed as State Route 178. Although proposed for signing as Route 178 in the year 1934, a segment of the 58th legislative route between US 101 near Santa Margarita and State Route 33 at McKittrick was not signed before 1964.
Note that US 466 is signed along with US 99, now State Route 99, between Bakersfield and Famoso Junction. Between Famoso and US 101 in Paso Robles, 466 US mostly became SR 46.
The eastern end is initially at I-15 north of Barstow. Route 58 was diverted to I-15 in Barstow south of the I-40 intersection. The former eastern terminal is now known as "Old Highway 58."
Future
California has long searched for federal funding for the extension of Interstate 40 west of Barstow; any such extension will use the Route 58 common route, if not the existing highway, as far west as at least Bakersfield, whose rapid growth has made it a significant traffic producer in its own right. The desired highway is being built little by little because Caltrans has funds, at least between Mojave and Barstow. Two intersections in-class in 1 1 / 2 miles (2.4 km) to each other around mile 76, roughly midway between Bakersfield and Mojave (Bealeville Road and California State Route 223), should be closed or upgraded to the intersection for the entire Route 58 to the Interstate standard.
In the Kramer Junction area, Caltrans plans to realign and expand the 13.3-mile segment of State Route 58 from 0.4 kilometers west of the Kern/San Bernardino County line to a point that is approximately 7.5 miles east of Kramer Junction of two conventional highway lanes to a four-lane freeway; and build the intersection at intersection 58/US 395. This will replace the crossroads on Route 58 and US 395 at Kramer Junction. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Kramer Junction Expressway was held on 19 January 2018.
To the west of Bakersfield, Westside Parkway, a highway running from the intersection between Heath Road and Stockdale Highway east to Truxtun Avenue, completed on April 15, 2015. Opened gradually from 2013, the road is currently under the jurisdiction of Bakersfield. As part of the Centennial Corridor project, Caltrans plans to build an extension east of the Westside Parkway to the intersection of Highway 58 and 99 highways at the West Bakersfield Interchange, but construction remains controversial as it will replace dozens of homes and businesses. in September 2017 all but a few buildings on the road have been destroyed As soon as the connection to Highway 99 is completed, Highway 58 will then be diverted to Stockdale Highway and Westside Parkway (and the city transfers the last jurisdiction to Caltrans), further planning to upgrade Stockdale Highway from Heath Road west to Interstate 5 as the freeway.
The San Luis Obispo Planning Commission is considering applying for permission to California Valley Solar Ranch and has released the Draft Environmental Impact Report with the closing date of public comments dated November 1, 2010. Among the points raised in DEIR is the aesthetic impact on Visibility that would be very inconvenient if the scale Large-scale industrial solar panels are placed to the north of Route 58 on the road section east of Lake Soda Lake.

Large intersection
Except where it begins with letters, postmiles are measured on the street as in 1964, based on the existing harmony at the time, and do not necessarily reflect the current mileage. R reflects the alignment in the route since then, M denotes a second rearrangement, L refers to overlap due to correction or change, and T denotes postmiles are classified as temporary (for a complete list of prefixes, see postmil definition list). Segments that remain unconstructed or have been released to local controls can be removed. The numbers are reset at the county line; the initial and final posts in each county are given in the county column.
