Breaking Amish is the American reality television series on the TLC television network debuting September 9, 2012. The series revolves around five young Anabaptist adults (four Amish and one Mennonite) who move to New York City to experience a different life and decide whether to return to their community or stay outside of their community and face the potential for seclusion by their family and friends. It follows cast members as they experience life in New York and face new situations involving work, friendship, romance, and lifestyle, plus a growing drama among the players as they undergo various experiences.
The relocation of members to New York City differs from Rumspringa, a transitional rite in which some 16-year-old Amishes are allowed to experience the outside world and decide if they want to stay with their home communities.
A news report on February 25, 2013, states that TLC has booked the second season of Breaking Amish with the original players. Breaking Amish: Brave New World is considered second season by TLC.
A spin off of Breaking Amish, titled Breaking Amish: Los Angeles, debuted on July 21, 2013, with a different cast.
On May 1, 2014, it was announced that Breaking Amish has spawned another spin-off, titled Back to Amish . The spin-off followed Breaking Amish season 1 cast member who all lived in Pennsylvania at the time of production, except for Kate, who lives in New York City. The two hour premiere begins on June 1, 2014, with the season airing seven episodes. TLC has since assumed Return to Amish as the season Breaking Amish and not a spin-off.
The second Breaking Amish spin off Breaking Amish: Brooklyn debuted on September 18, 2014, with new players.
The fourth season of Breaking Amish returns with the title Return to Amish aired on May 31, 2015. The fourth season will be the end of Mary, with it probably being the last season altogether.
On June 14, 2016, it was reported that Breaking Amish has been updated for the fifth season ( Back to Amish for the third season), with the premiere date July 10, 2016. A trailer was released by TLC revealed many of the original returning players, including Mary, who reportedly will not return for the fifth season, and Sabrina, who appeared in season one, two and three, but was absent from the fourth season.

Controversy
Shortly after the first episode aired, several news outlets reported that all players had left their respective communities before recording the show, or that they were married. It has also been reported that the relationship between cast members is misrepresented and that there are many inconsistencies between facts and reality represented in the television program. Production has come with some 'non-Amish' activities in the background of the players. As the episode continues, production continues to reveal other aspects of previous activity, including items that were not previously released as spoilers by other media outlets.
Some information is shared on air by cast during production:
Season 1
- In episode 1 it was shown that Kate spent time in Florida, driving and getting DUI.
- In the long version of episode 3, Jeremiah states that he was expelled from the Amish three different times, dressed in 'English' each time. ('English' is usually used in series which means "non-Anabaptist.")
- In episode 6 Jeremiah states, when Abe talks about marrying Rebecca, that she was once married.
- In episode 7, Abe and Rebecca discuss how they often sneak - with their girlfriends and with others - to dress 'English' and go play bowling.
- In episode 7 Rebecca discusses how Abe ever moved to Kentucky and she to North Dakota, renewing their friendship when they return to their Amish community.
- In episode 8 Sabrina discusses the fact that she was married, in 2009, a Mennonite man - and that marrying a best friend does not always work.
- In episode 10 Rebecca states that she has married straight after her 18th birthday in 2009 and divorced in July 2012. She also mentioned that she has a daughter.
- In episode 12, the group discusses the fact that many Amish teenagers will sneak out and dress 'English', so it's not surprising to find their photos, or many other Amish teenagers, during a trip outside the community./li>
