Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick is a line of medium-duty trucks manufactured by Chevrolet division and GMC General Motors. Introduced in 1980 as a variant of the C/K medium duty truck line, two successive generations were generated, as General Motors consolidated all of its conventional and medium-sized light truck lines in 1990. During the 2000s, GM quit production. medium-duty trucks, with recent examples from Kodiak and TopKick produced in 2009.

Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick are commonly used as a base for work trucks, hauler cargo, dump trucks, and similar vehicles; cutaway and cowled-chassis variants are produced for bus use. Through the aftermarket, coachbuilders produce variants with pickup truck bodies for consumer use.

For the 2019 model year, Chevrolet entered the mid-duty truck segment, with a Class 4-6 variant of Silverado, developed in a joint venture with Navistar International.

Generasi pertama (1980-1989)

For 1980, General Motors introduced the Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick as a Class 7 conventional truck. Placed between the C/K medium duty truck lanes and slightly below the conventional Class 8 Super-Brigade Chevrolet Bruin/GMC Kodiak/TopKick brought into production to accommodate the Caterpillar 3208 diesel in the C/K chassis. In order to fit the engine, the designers add a higher hoof hood (similar to Bruin/Brigadier), requiring the cabin to be raised several inches compared to the C/K medium duty track.

Differentiated from medium duty C/K with its hood, Kodiak/TopKick is given a full width grille (shifting the headlights from the inside to the bottom of the grille). Kodiak follows the tradition of naming Chevrolet from the name "frontier beast" for conventional weight (Chevrolet Bison and Chevrolet Bruin) while TopKick is a military slang term (in line with GMC Brigadier and GMC General). Like the C/K, Kodiak/TopKick is offered with a two-door and four-door cabin configuration.

Chevrolet Kodiak and GMC TopKick are powered by a single engine: Caterpillar 3208 10.4L V8 diesel, both in naturally aspirated and turbocharged form. Second generation (1990-2002) Second generation >

For 1990, General Motors released the second-generation Chevrolet Kodiak/GMC Topkick under the GMT530 architecture. After the formation of the Volvo GM joint venture in 1986, GMC General, GMC Brigadier, and GMC Astro heavy-truck lines were discontinued, with GMT530 consolidating medium C/K 1973-1989 and Kodiak heavy duty/TopKick into one model line. Splitting its cabin with a GMT400 C/K pickup (introduced in 1988), Kodiak and TopKick are offered with two-door and four-door cabins; Increased cabin became optional during the 1990s.

During its thirteen years of production, the GMT530 platform underwent relatively little change. For 1995, GM replaced the Kodiak and TopKick badges under the model name C4500-C8500, carrying medium duty trucks in line with the rest of the C/K naming convention. As an option, a lower profile "aerodynamic" hood became an option (not available for service bus applications weight and school).

After GM ended GMT530 production for the US market after 2002, production for Mexico continued in Toluca, Mexico, until 2008. From 1995 to 2001, GMT530 was assembled in Brazil using components imported from Mexico, built for Mexico specifications. All examples of the Brazilian market are manufactured with Caterpillar 3116 diesel engines. In Brazil, the trucks are sewn according to their GMVR (in metric ton) and the output of horsepower is round (12-170 to 12 ton-170 hp, 14-190 to 14 ton-190 hp, and 16-220 for 16 ton-220 hp).

Like its predecessor, the GMT530 is offered with a gasoline engine as standard equipment; diesel engine is optional. The standard engine is back to 6.0L V8 with carbureted 7.0L V8 option. In 1991, a 7.8L V8 injected fuel replaced the 7.0L V8, replacing the 6.0L V8 in the mid-1990s. In 2002, the 7.4L V8 was replaced by the 8.1L V8 (the highest-displacement V8 ever made by Chevrolet). At the launch of 1990, Kodiak/TopKick offered Caterpillar 3116 diesel inline-6, with Caterpillar 3126 being the second option in 1997.

Third generation (2003-2010)

For 2003, General Motors released the third-generation Chevrolet Kodiak/GMC Topkick under the GMT560 architecture. Since General Motors felt both names had better market recognition, the line of medium duty trucks was released under the previous Kodiak/TopKick nameplates, with the Cx500 as a secondary part of the nomenclature. Displayed as part of the redesign is a change in Kodiak/TopKick design layout. To better compete with DuraStar's heavy duty truck and Freightliner Business Class M2 better, GMT560 truck switches to a vertically oriented cab configuration to allow lower cabin floor, higher cabin space, and better incoming and outgoing. Derived from a full-size van Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana, the cabin is manufactured in a two-door and four-door configuration (since commercial trucks have a GVWR over 8500 pounds, they are manufactured without airbags).

During production, GMT560 is produced with little change. With the exception of the grid, Kodiaks and TopKicks are almost identical; depending on the trim, the version is produced with two or four headlights. Brought from previous generations, GMT560 chassis is manufactured in Class 5-7 configurations, on C4500, C5500, C6500, and C7500 models. Effective as GMC Brigadier's successor, the C8500 model tandem shaft was introduced (with up to 46,000-lb GVWR).

At GMT560 Kodiak/TopKick, the powertrain configuration is derived from the model specification. On the C4500/C5500s, the 8.1L V8 is brought from the previous generation, with a 6.6L Duramax V8 diesel replacing the Caterpillar 3116. The diesel engine is standard on the C6500 and higher, with the 7.8L Duramax LG4 inline-6 as standard, with 7.2 L Caterpillar C7 (redesigned Caterpillar 3126) offered as an option.

GMT560 four-wheel drive

In 2005, GM added four-wheel drive as factory-mounted option on the Kodiak/TopKicks C4500/C5500. In the break from the tradition of naming GM trucks, the model does not adopt the "K" nomenclature, being a model line of C4500/5500 4x4. In place of an independent front suspension (used on a 3500-series pickup truck), GMT560 4x4 uses a solid front axle suspension. Powered by 6.6L Duramax V8, 4x4 using Allison 2000 series 5-speed in 2005-2006 (replaced with Allison 2350 automatic 6-speed) with New Process 273C case transfer. 5.13: 1 is the only axle gear ratio offered for the 4x4 version.

For 2007, GM introduced a heavy duty 9000 lb spring and brake package for the front axle of the 70HD Fund; Rear axles (Dana S14-110L) are available in four sizes: 11,000 lb, 13,500 lb, 15,000 lb, and 19,000 lb (the latter two are optional on two wheel drive configurations).

Isuzu H-Series

For 2003, Isuzu released a conventional cab truck, named the Isuzu H-Series. Aimed mostly for vocational use, the Isuzu H-Series is marketed as a competitor to Hino 600 and Freightliner M2. Based on Kodiak/TopKick C6500/C7500, the H-Series differs only in its grille design, sharing 7.8L Duramax inline-six with C6500/7500 and Chevrolet/GMC T6500/7500 (based on Isuzu Forward).

In the 2018 model year, the H-Series is the first conventional (and only) convent truck sold by Isuzu.

Termination

In December 2007, GM announced its intention to sell its medium duty truck business, including Kodiak and TopKick, to Navistar International. In August 2008 both GM and Navistar announced that their memorandum of understanding for the purchase had expired and was not updated.

After four years of working with many potential buyers, including the anticipated five-year deal with Isuzu Motors announced in late January 2009 to take over the production line in Flint, Michigan, General Motors decided to halt its medium-sized truck operations. Production of Chevy Kodiak and GMC TopKick medium duty trucks at Flint ceased on July 31, 2009. The Montreal plant also closed on 31 July 2009.

Successor

At the 2018 Truck Exhibition in Indianapolis, Indiana, General Motors launched a new line of medium-duty trucks for the 2019 model. Developed in a joint venture with Navistar International, Chevrolet launched the Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD (for Grades 4.5 and 6 , each). In the shift from the previous Kodiak brand name, Chevrolet expanded to the Silverado brand name in almost all of its truck lines (currently, no GMC partners are announced).

Sharing the cabin with the Silverado pickup truck line, the HD model range is rendered its own chassis with forward tilt hood. As with GMT360, 4x2 and 4x4 drive configurations will be offered. At launch, a single powertrain will be offered: 350 hp 6.6L Duramax turbodiesel V8 with Allison automatic transmission.

School bus

Following its predecessor C/K medium-duty tradition, the second generation Kodiak/TopKick was used by General Motors to supply the school bus industry during production runs. In an unusual move at the time, starting in 1992, GM offered Kodiak/TopKick solely to a single body manufacturer, Blue Bird Corporation from 1992 to 2002. While the GM chassis is not offered to other manufacturers, Blue Bird offers another combination that available. (Ford B700, International 3800, and Freightliner FS65 newer) at an additional price. Couple manufacturers and chassis suppliers will become common during the 1990s in school bus making, but after 2002, General Motors will not be able to remain a chassis supplier. The Kodiak/TopKick school bus chassis is also famous for being one of the last full-size school bus chassis powered by a gasoline engine.

Withdraw conversion

The Kodiak C4500 was specifically introduced at the 2006 Chicago Automotive Exhibition. Aimed at RXT International (also introduced there), the price was set at $ 70,000. Both share a number of similarities, such as the options included in their premium package (a powerful audio system and DVD-based navigation system). For comparison, the C4500 has a higher power (300 hp versus 230 hp) while the RXT has a higher pulling capacity at 16,000 pounds (7,300 kg); C4500 is 4x4 like CXT International is larger.

The conversion of a commercial GMC TopKick called cabbage pickup truck Primary Class IV TopKick Pickup was developed by General Motors and Monroe Truck Equipment (MTE). This special version comes with an average 8-foot (2.4 m) steel pickup box and a rear door with special composite side panels and protective Rhino interior layers. This vehicle serves as an alternative mode for the Ironhide characters in the first three Transformers films.

Cadillac One

Entering service on January 20, 2009, "Cadillac One" is the common name for Presidential Car of the President of the United States of America. Unlike previous presidential limousines, it was not at all based on production vehicles, borrowed assemblies from several different vehicles from the Cadillac 2009 line (mainly Escalade and CTS). Despite wearing Cadillac and badging limousine bodies, armored vehicles use four-wheel drive chassis and powertrain from heavy duty truck General Motors (Chevrolet Kodiak/GMC TopKick). Due to its high security nature, many details about Cadillac One remain classified.
